“nothing waits at the top of the hill but the top of the hill (i love hills!)”

City: Eugene area State: OR

Favorite Shoe: salomon speed cross/max Size: 8.5

Age: 45.2 years old

Marital Status: married

Family members:
Jakob (son)

What I do for work:
SAHM; physical therapist on sabbatical (out-patient ortho)

Places I’ve called home and why I like where I am now:
lots of places... the best of the best: Nebraska (born/raised-Go HUSKERS!), Colorado (infinite reasons-will always be home), Alaska (the ultimate and bestest), Central Oregon (high, dry, trails, volcanos!); the rainy side of OR... the people are great, the weather stinks.

When I started running and what got me started:
1993; needed a new thing after ending "team sports era" of high school and suffering through the stairmaster for a year. THEN discovered marathons on a whim (decided a week before) and trails a few years after that (living in Vail). wheeeee! stumbled upon ultras when I moved to ak. and i've been hooked ever since! ultra friends are family!

What does running mean to me:
in running, as in life, you can find analogies for each experience, no matter how small or complex--and it's the ultimate release. it's also ammendable to every age, ability, experience, moment, segment of life, mindset, and location. it also means i can enjoy ice cream and cookies more frequently.

Running accomplishments: View my Pikes Peak Ascent/Marathon results
lots of fun from the 10k-100mi but most successful in the uphill races (bigger the better), 50k's, and 50milers. Trail trumps road everytime...

What I like about trail/mountain running:
freedom from "time" pressures; less pounding; immersed in the wild; THE HILLS!!! (I love up... ) We can learn so much... and are reminded of our place in the food chain and the grand scheme of things. Mindful living. MOOSES!

Favorite running trail and why:
Trails above Beatenburg, Hasliberg, Wengen, etc in Switzerland; Snowdonia; Hardrock 100 course...the old mosquito marathon trail combo--everything I love about trails--great views, burly hills, high alpine tundra... also any of the peaks around Anchorage (wolverine)... including resurrection pass on the kenai; the PCT and 3 sisters wilderness area. i enjoy trees, but i love views even more... must be my nebraska roots... the Grand Canyon is one of my favorite places in the world... I finally did the R2R2R this year... have enjoyed other adventures there as well. In CO I thoroughly enjoy Green Mtn, the front range trails (apex, matt winters, deer ck), anything out of Vail and Breck areas... the PCT in OR and NoCal... Miwok in Marin... oh wait, does favorite mean only one?

Favorite trail/mountain race and why:
resurrection pass 50miler, on the kenai peninsula in ak
why? unsupported, 17-23+ runners--many of whom are my dearest friends from the ultra crew up there--big animals--gorgeous fall weather--first weekend of darkness after a summer of manic sun.. and a doozy of a hill (s) during the last 10mi of the race. Grand Canyon remains a favorite even tho it's not a race... Quad Dipsea... best ever!

Best running experience:
1. finishing my last res pass 50mi in my PR time without puking... well, until i was driving home.
2. training for the winter susitna 100 race in ak--I love the training and my partners there...followed by a big burger at BigLake lodge and then later that eve a huge bowl of udon soup from kumogoro's in anchortown.
3. small group runs up and around 3 sisters wilderness area.
4. miwok trails... WOW! it's good to be alive!
5. my time on the WS100 trail
6. Quad Dipsea

Worst running experience:
repeatedly heaving 2/3 of the way through 4 different races regardless of changes made to food/fluid... arrgh! and on an ultra relay, not getting the repeated vomiting under control and ending up in the ER in the middle of the night for 2 IV's and some sleepy meds... expensive race.

Neatest thing found on a run:
recently shed moose antler at mile 30 of a 50mile race in ak... folks 2 hrs back did not see it--evidently chomped by the furry creatures in the area as the only folks on the trail that cold rainy day were the racers.

Running related bathroom stop story:
trail, quick potty stop, no one around for miles... midway through AK trail 50miler, haven't seen people forever, oops, except that biker that just stealthily crashed right beside me... how on earth was he so quiet? nature calls! :)

Running pet peeves:
nasty technical slippery downhills (I run faster up the same stuff, embarrassingly so); devil's club with hornet's nests beneath; poison freakin oak; injuries (tho i've been fairly lucky thus far)

Something non running related that no one would guess about me:
I'm a non-drinking, church-going,mama, runner, ultimate Frisbee player with a love of Shakespeare, musicals, the occasional heavy metal and/or rap band (beastie boys, foo fighters!, linkin park, metallica at times)

Other hobbies and interests:
hanging with my hubby, travel, good coffee, acoustic music, bluegrass, good conversation, being outside, dogs, cozy fires (the controlled kind you roast marshmallows with); need to get functional on tele skis!

Other stuff:
Looking fwd to continually reinventing the wheel... and showing my kiddo the great outdoors via amazing trails...
