Dying a painful death during the Pikes Peak Marathon
|
Why just run when you can run mountains?
City: Chandler State: AZ
Favorite Shoe: Fila Flow Size: 10
Age: 47 years old
Marital Status: Married
Family members:
My better half - Lindsay Cavner
What I do for work:
I am an IT Project Manager at eFunds Corp.
Places Ive called home and why I like where I am now:
Although I've lived in a lot of places, my favorite place of course was Manitou Springs. I loved being able to run from my house to the top of Pikes Peak in less than 3 hours. Other places include Vienna, Austria - Baton Rouge, Louisiana - Boise, Idaho - Chandler, AZ - Woodland Park, CO - Leesburg, VA
When I started running and what got me started:
I started running at 15, but nothing too serious. I would just go jogging with my dad. Mainly I played soccer. At 18 I did a few local races before pulling my Achilles tendon. Mainly this was a result of my love of running up an 18 mile uphill road to our ski resort called Bogus Basin. Then I entered a snowshoe race in December 98 and became hooked. I've been running ever since.
What does running mean to me:
It is how I survive. I relate better to other runners and rock climbers.

What I like about trail/mountain running:
Mountain running gives me a sense of attaining a goal (the summit).
Favorite running trail and why:
Barr Trail is definitely my favorite. Mainly because I know it so well and it has a couple of really great races on it.
Favorite trail/mountain race and why:
Pikes Peak Marathon. It is my ultimate challenge and one of the only races I have never done well.
Best running experience:
Running in the Sky Games. It was amazing meeting great people coming from all over the world. Running the steeps in the Alps was a different, but pleasurable experience.
Worst running experience:
2000 Pikes Peak Marathon. I have never bonked that bad. I have never taken so long to finish a race.
Neatest thing found on a run:
Huge group of mountain goats, bears and my sense of adventure.
Running related bathroom stop story:
Once had to stop 3 times on a 30 minute tempo run up Barr Trail. Need I say more?
Running pet peeves:
I don't like to lose.
Something non running related that no one would guess about me:
I used to be a violinist!
Other hobbies and interests:
Rock climbing, mountaineering, a good movie and a good restaurant. I also enjoy a fine wine or a good beer on occasion.
Other stuff:
According to my Mom, I learned to run before I learned to walk. I'm just coming off of a year of injury with plantar faciitis. Platelet therapy did the trick after trying just about everything. 'Google' it if your having the same problem.
