What I do for work:
Compliance Officer at a large health care agency.
Places Ive called home and why I like where I am now:
Colorado Springs; Austin; Chicago; San Francisco; and back to Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak has always been home; its where my heart is; its where I get my inspiration, it humbles me and grounds me.
When I started running and what got me started:
In fifth grade a cardiologist put me on "no activity" status. I sat in the classroom every day for a year when others went to the gym and outside. The day I was released to play again was the day of the President's Physical Fitness test. I came in last in the running test (the year before I was one of the fastest.)I promised myself that I would never come in last again. I haven't.
What does running mean to me:
In many ways running means everything. It is freedom, independence, strength, primal, hard work, commitment, passion, energy, connectivity.
Running accomplishments:
In '79 I placed forth in x-country, the mile and two mile in the State high-school championship meets. In '78 placed second at GOG, first in '79 (65 minutes)and ran and placed a few times in the early '80s. Broke several school and SEC records at UT Austin; All-American in X-country my freshman year, ran a 33:44 10K. My biggest accomplishment is the fact that I have been running/training since 1975 and have had five foot surgeries resulting in two fused toes and one arch.
What I like about trail/mountain running:
It is primal.
Favorite running trail and why:
Section 16; the challenge and the views!
Favorite trail/mountain race and why:
I have just run a few- no favorite yet!
Best running experience:
Racing a storm up to Inteman with my friend Jake, the black lab. We lost the race. It quickly got cold and hailed. We huddled under a pine at the top watching six inches of water gush down the trail.
Worst running experience:
SEC Regional in 1980 at SMU. Told I had one lap to go in a 10K; putting everything I had into that lap; being told again that I had one lap to go; I swore I would never run at SMU again; I haven't!
Neatest thing found on a run:
Friends!
Running related bathroom stop story:
Many!!!
Running pet peeves:
Headsets.
Something non running related that no one would guess about me:
I lived in Germany for ten years as a kid.
Other hobbies and interests:
Painting, woodworking, gardening, camping, fishing, dinner parties, scrabble, Nordic skiing, eating, cooking..thinking about philosophy....I like most things!
Other stuff:
Would like to be fast again and run well into my 90s.
