City: Colorado Springs State: CO
Favorite Shoe: Hoka Size: 12
Age: 78.2 years old
Marital Status: married
Family members:
Diane, Blake, Dakota (k-9)
What I do for work:
Retired as of 2/2010, living the good life!
Places Ive called home and why I like where I am now:
Lived mostly in the North East while in the Navy, three years in San Diego. Served 20 years, retired as a Navy Lt. I was born in Pueblo, raised in Alamosa until 13, then lived in Los Alamos, N.M., Albuquerque, then Rapid City, S.D. for a couple of years before joining the Navy. Colorado has always been my favorite place (I've been all over the world), not only for the beauty of the country, but for a good wholesome family environment. Blake age 22, is a great kid who also enjoys running, and ran the Ascent in 2008 (blizzard year), time was a little over 3 hours. Blake qualified for the first wave of the Ascent by completing the Sedona Half Marathon in 1:37, 23 of 517 finishers. Blake is also aware of how lucky he is to live here!
When I started running and what got me started:
Started running in 1990 to keep from putting on that 10-15 lbs. each winter. Next thing I knew, I had run the Woodland Park Mayor's Cup 5k, and I was hooked! My wife said at that next thing she knew I'd be running up Pikes Peak like a lot of other people she works with. My reply: no way! Ran the Ascent for the first time in 1993.... it's been all uphill since then! Have completed 19 P/P's so far,3 Marathons, 16 ascents.
What does running mean to me:
Staying fit so I can enjoy life with my son and wife. Running provides quite time, I solve a lot of problems out there on the trail. When I run with friends, it's a great social event!
Running accomplishments:
View my Pikes Peak Ascent/Marathon results
Have completed the Pikes Peak Marathon three times, the Ascent sixteen times. Best Marathon time 5:34 (2002)age 59. Best ascent time 3:13 in 1999 age 56. Not the fastest on the hill, but ok for my age I guess. Ran the Walt Disney World Marathon in 1997. Finished in 3:50. Wanted to be faster based on my Peak experience, but it is still 26.2 miles! Add in 100% humidity (foggy at start) and lower eighties at the finish, it was ok I guess. This is a really neat marathon for anyone who hasn't tried it. Finished the Barr Trail Mtn. Race several times, best time 2:14.
What I like about trail/mountain running:
Peace, quiet, solitude; big fluffy snowflakes floating down around you as you head up the trail!
Favorite running trail and why:
Red Rocks to Inteman Trail. It's a great workout for a mid week run, not too steep but uphill with great scenery.
Favorite trail/mountain race and why:
Summer Round-up? Great out and back course, you can really fly back down High drive!
Best running experience:
Walt Disney Marathon. Fun course through the Magic Kingdom with all the characters out there to cheer you on!
Something non running related that no one would guess about me:
Retired Navy, retired merchant (owned Navajo Gallery in Manitou Springs for 28 years)
Other hobbies and interests:
Skiing, fishing, travelling
