City: Colorado Springs State: CO
Favorite Shoe: currently in Rykas Size: 6
Age: 57.8 years old
Marital Status: M
I live with Tom Warley, spouse; Jackson Warley, son, 7; Savannah, chocolate lab; RitaMae, cat; Slither, garter snake; Sticky, tree frog. It's like the Adams Family in an apartment.
What I do for work:
Places Ive called home and why I like where I am now:
Born in Jamaica, WI; raised in Cincinnati, OH; college in Williamsburg, VA; Denver, CO for 17 years; Panama City Beach, FL for 3.5 years; now Colorado Springs. CO feels like home.
When I started running and what got me started:
I started at 17 when I was in college and had to do a required PE class! I chose running (then called "jogging"!) and got hooked.
What does running mean to me:
Freedom, solitude, camaraderie, challenge, humility, joy, peace...and not getting a fat ass.
View my Pikes Peak Ascent/Marathon results
NYC Marathon '87, Marine Corps Marathon '03, numerous 5k's, 10k's, and 1/2's. In the past few years I've been placing in 5k's in FL but I doubt I'll fare so well against CO women!
What I like about trail/mountain running:
It's so gorgeous out there!
Favorite running trail and why:
No favorite yet - I'm falling in love with all of them.
Favorite trail/mountain race and why:
I've never run one before but I just signed up for the '03 Ascent.
Best running experience:
Too many from which to choose! Many great experiences sharing runs with friends over the years...thanks, Mark, JoAnn, George, David, Rick, Tom, Kit, Johanna, and countless others. And of course crossing that finish line always feels good.
Worst running experience:
Muscle cramps in mile 21 of Marine Corp took my projected finishing time from 3:51 to 4:23. That was a bit of a bummer but it's still hard to call it a "bad experience". I finished strong and still had lots of fun.
Neatest thing found on a run:
Inner peace...and thanks for reminding me, Tom.
Running related bathroom stop story:
At NYC the potty lines were abominable so my friend and I took our Styrofoam coffee cups and squeezed in between two guys at "The World's Longest Urinal", a makeshift trough a few hundred feet long. We pulled our shorts aside, peed in our cups, and dumped it out. The guy next to me looked over and said "Hey, that's cheating!"
Running pet peeves:
The question every non-runner ALWAYS asks when they find out I run: "So, do you run every day?"
Something non running related that no one would guess about me:
I like James Bond movies (it's a character flaw).
Other hobbies and interests:
Almost everything interests me, really. I'm easily entertained.
I always race with the same 3 goals:
1) Have fun.
2) Don't get hurt.
3) Run as fast as I can without compromising the 1st 2 goals.
