"Big, fat old guy"
City: Bronx State: NY
Favorite Shoe: Nike Air Max Size: 13
Age: 71.2 years old
Marital Status: Married
Adult son and daughter (non-runners)
What I do for work:
Retired; former HS Eng. teacher
Places Ive called home and why I like where I am now:
Co-op City: Greenway (.85 mile) and access to Botanical Gardens (8.5 mile loop), Orchard Beach (8.5 mile loop) Van Cortlandt Park (10 mile loop)
When I started running and what got me started:
I was 24 and wanted to run NYC marathon. It also posed a personal challenge to be able to train my body to run long distances.
What does running mean to me:
Running provides me now with serenity, discipline and the curiousity of finding out if I can get back into running shape after all these years of doing other things. My main problem is losing muscle weight from bodybuilding (I'm 6'1" 210 lbs.)This doesn't help me when going uphill (besides being 56 yrs. old)!
3:03 Marathon, 62:00 10-miles, 38:40 10K, 14th place Marine Corps 1/2 Marathon (sometime in the '70's), 1st place Masters=Co-op City 5 miler 1990. Used to run w/ Joe Erskine (former Millrose ultra-marathon member of first American team to win London-Brighton 52 miler.)
What I like about trail/mountain running:
Love it! Oneness w/Nature, spiritual qualities that transcend words, forgiving on knees, strengthens feet and ankles. It's all good!
Favorite running trail and why:
Hunter Island (northen end of Orchard Beach) in Pelham Bay Park.
Was one of my first trails when I started running; lots of nostalgia.
Favorite trail/mountain race and why:
Haven't really run any.
Best running experience:
Winning 1st place in a race in my community where I live.
Worst running experience:
My 1st marathon; thought I was going to die! I then realized that training had to be bumped up and taken more seriously.
Neatest thing found on a run:
Running related bathroom stop story:
Nearly used used some poison ivy leaves to clean myself; lucky to realize this at the last moment!
Running pet peeves:
Cars; too fast and too close!
Something non running related that no one would guess about me:
I'm an NEH Fellow?
Other hobbies and interests:
Videogames and European sports: bike racing and soccer
Running saved my life; that's all I have to say!
