Good Evening Incline Club!

This week, the biggest race of the year (thankfully) turns into a meander, guidelines on preventing the club from going to the dogs and a lone race report.

NEXT RUN: Waldo/LRR Double!
***********************************************
Sunday, March 22, 8:00AM — Memorial Park
Waldo/LRR double! Run the UPT and then head over and do Waldo Canyon — clockwise. Next, head up LRR and return via the Barr Trail. 3-4 hours, if it would be longer just do Waldo or LRR.

PPA / PPM Registration Update:
***********************************************
The race to get into the race is over! And unlike past years, everybody who wanted to get in should have gotten in. As many of you know by now, there are still slots open for both the 1st and 2nd wave of the Ascent. The marathon, however, has filled. So for all of those out there who still want to register for the Ascent, you can. There are even slots open if you need to use the TCR series as your qualifier.

Going to the Dogs:
***********************************************
Many folks have asked, so here is a recap of the clubs guidelines for our four legged friends:
* Please pick up after your pooch.
* Note that dogs and crowds of runners usually do not mix well. Please keep your friend away from the main group so we don’t have any issues with folks stepping on or tripping over poor rover.
* Along those lines, when starting out, either wait a few minutes or pick an alternate path (i.e., down Lovers Lane) to avoid crowds of runners.
* Note that while most dogs like to run, some dogs don’t like the competition. Please keep em separated so as to avoid any misunderstandings.

***********************************************
Weekend Weather Report:
***********************************************
Most of this week has been beautiful, and if the predictions are correct, Sunday will start off in the low 40’s and get into the mid to upper 50’s by noon (topping out at around 70). Please note that they are calling for dramatically lower temps on Monday, so Sunday’s forecast is subject to change.

This week, Andy Wooten shows that running down in the mountains can be fun.

2009 Salida to Turret Marathon/Run Through Time — Salida Colorado — 03/14/2009

Andy Wooten reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles.
Goal: Complete in under 5 hours.
Results: 4:55:29
Website: http://www.salidarec.com/ccrc/index.htm

General Summary:
The race is sort of an out and back from Salida to the old mining town of Turret. There is a half marathon option and a full marathon option.

Things Done Right:
Tapering before the race was adequate. Fueling and hydration before during and after the marathon was spot on.

Things Done Wrong:
Carried too much “stuff” in my running pack as usual. Went out a little too fast the first ten miles or so.

Any Other Stuff:
I’ve been training for the race pretty much since the end of November. Doing research and reading accounts on this race posted by other runners made the course seem as if it would be challenging. That being said I did not go into this expecting to have an easy day.

The weather was great and the course was 99.9% clear. The first 8 miles or so of the course was uphill. The next four or so generally downhill until the turnaround in the town of Turret. Of course that made the next four miles or so uphill after the turnaround. After that the course was a consistent trade off of uphill and downhill until mile 20 or so then it was all downhill literally to return to Salida.

It was a fun race.
