Subject: Incline Club News: V15 TH #21 Party Time!
Good Evening Incline Club!
First, Id like to thank Ron Ilgen and the entire PPA/M race committee who have worked countless hours for the past year to bring us this years Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon. Given the complexity and logistics involved, Im always amazed at just how well run the entire event is. Once again, everything was perfect.
Id like to thank all of the race day volunteers, many of whom put in a 12+ hour day. The race would simply not exist if it was not for you.
To all ICers whose names I spotted on the finishers list, congratulations. You have all completed one of the hardest races in the country and no matter what your finishing time, that is an accomplishment you can be proud of.
It was an excellent year, and I look forward to seeing all of you on Thursday night!

This week Thom reports on the best way to taper for the PPA; Beverly discovers that its not easy to hit a 6:30 unless you go out too fast and blow up, Andrea runs to remember, Tim has no memory at all, Briana blows her goal off of the peak and Mike wins a nice spot in the med tent once again. The next day Don throws down a 5:02. Further up north, Andy and Wes both go the distance.

Thomas Dinwoodie reports:
Distance: 198 miles total
Goal: 8MPM
Results: helped team Solstice place 2nd in the open
Website: http://www.wildwestrelay.com/results/2011/index.html
General Summary:
This wasnt my planned taper for the ascent, but a friend was in need...so I showed up and I ran.
Things Done Right:
No expectations just run. Met some great new friends and am looking forward to trying it again.
Things Done Wrong:
Nothing. There wasnt anything to do wrong I just showed up and ran.(Well maybe one thing we didnt bring BEER.)
Any Other Stuff:
THE MOST FUN Ive had beating myself up running......

Pikes Peak Ascent Manitou Springs, CO 08/20/2011
Beverly Weaver reports:
Distance: 13.32
Goal: 6:20 or make cutoff
Results: DNF
General Summary:
Nice day for the Ascent. Too bad I wasnt in shape to make it past the cutoffs and to the top.
Things Done Right:
Trained with Incline Club and spent time running at altitude.
Things Done Wrong:
Should be faster.
Since the cutoff at Barr Camp is 3 hours and the one at A-Frame is 4:15, I was forced to push hard to make the cutoff times. I barely made it past Barr Camp at 3 hours, and was in trouble by the time I got to the Bottomless Pit sign. At 4:10 I was too far below A-Frame to make that cutoff, so I turned around and ran back down.
It is disappointing that the current cutoff times do not allow for proper pacing to run anything over 6 hours for the Ascent. If I could have run my own pace up to Barr Camp and on to A-Frame, I would not have been suffering and would have finished before the cutoff at the top.
So, that means that the cutoffs are intended for those people from low altitude who lose major time above A-Frame and not for those of us who train at altitude and want to pace ourselves to finish between 6 and 6:30.
Comments on Calculator:
The calculator works well for me. I used the 5:54 times to make the Barr Camp cutoff. Unfortunately, I wasnt in shape to run the Ascent under 6 hours this year. If I could have used the calculator and run at the pace for 6:20, then I would have been able to finish the race.
Any Other Stuff:
Cutoffs are made for low altitude runners and dont do justice to those who are slow and want to pace themselves properly.

Pikes Peak Ascent Manitou Springs, CO 08/20/2011
Andrea Cichosz reports:
Distance: very long
Goal: between 4:30 and 5:00
Results: 5:04
General Summary:
I already knew early in the season that this was not going to be a record breaking year for me. But this year, I thought, I did not have the emotional baggage of the last one, when my son had just left for a year in Germany.
On the way down from the summit, after my last training run, I received a call. I listened in horror, finding out that the son of a close friend was going to be taken off life support that afternoon. He had been injured in a tragic accident in his home 5 days prior and had been in the ICU fighting for his life since then. GianLuc was about the same age as my youngest son. His parents and three siblings are one of the nicest and most normal families around. I have known this child since he was a baby. He was an outstanding athlete with a great future and a funny joyful boy. This is so close to home that I still cannot wrap my mind around it or think about it without choking up. I am very emotional and I seriously considered not even starting the race because I am so distraught. When I found out that a memorial was going to be held at 12:15pm during the Pride of the Rockies soccer tournament on Saturday, I decided to run the Ascent after all and dedicate it to this extraordinary young man whose life
has been cut short so tragically. I wore a bracelet, sold in his memory. GianLuc was on my mind the entire way up the mountain and I stopped at 12:15 in the 16 Golden Steps to remember him. It was not my fastest Ascent by a long shot. But from now on, whenever I look at Pikes Peak from my living room, I will have to think of the funny little twelve year old jumping between the rocks.
Things Done Right:
Ran it despite.
Things Done Wrong:

Pikes Peak Ascent Manitou Springs, CO 08/20/2011
Tim Virgo reports:
Distance: 13.32 m
Goal: Improve on last year
Results: PR 10 minutes better
Website: http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org
General Summary:
I actually dont remember much it was a bit like watching a movie of somebody else running. I remember seeing Fred Wright on Ruxton, and Larrys helpful commentary at the top, and not having the dexterity to high 5 Teresa at the Barr Camp, but thats about it.
Things Done Right:
Training: Consistent, small, measurable, improvements for 6 months before race.
Nutrition: carried as many ShotBlocks as I ate.
Things Done Wrong:
Didnt stick to my target pulse rate on the lower sections.
The soles of my running shoes started to fall off the previous Sunday on the Golden Stairs, so I had to run in new shoes. Physically the new shoes were fine, but they were fluorescent lemon yellow, which resulted in psychological damage caused by suggestions about my fashion sense from random members of the public and fellow ICers even at the finish line (thanks Larry!)

Pikes Peak Ascent Manitou Springs, CO 08/20/2011
Briana Ferguson reports:
Distance: 13
Goal: 4:30
Results: 427 overall; 72nd gender position; 17/77 age group position; 1056 bib#; time 3:52:56
General Summary:
My place was 427 overall; 72nd gender position; 17/77 age group position; 1056 bib#; time 3:52:56. The 2nd Wave Ascent was a great first time experience for me. I was targeting to get to the summit anywhere between 4 and 5 hours, but made it just under 4 hours. I am grateful for all of the training and for the safe journey.
Things Done Right:
I hydrated well the night before and the morning of the race. My timing on fueling/carbo loading the night before was good since I did not experience stomach trouble. My concentration was stronger at times.
Things Done Wrong:
I could have pushed harder past the Ws, doing more short runs at times where applicable before A-frame. I am still up on my toes a lot, indicative of blisters, so I am reviewing my form per some running gurus observations.
Any Other Stuff:
There was one part of the course near Cirque that I almost cut the corner because the trail was hard to see so I turned back around and made sure that I stayed on course.

Pikes Peak Ascent Manitou Springs, CO 08/20/2011
Michael Everson reports:
Distance: 13.3M
Goal: 1. Finish! 2. PR! 3. 3:15
Results: 2/3
Website: http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org/
General Summary:
13.3 miles up Pikes Peak. Catch a van back to GC. Then bus back to Manitou. This is my 13th attempt at PPA or PPM.
Things Done Right:
Trained my ass off this year. Many IC runs. Worked out with Baxter and Erchinger all Winter, Spring and Summer on the Incline. Worked out with Roger Austin, Dan Cockrell, Brad Poppele, Randy Triplett, and other better runners than I am to get me in shape. Got my butt kicked regularly by Cockrell, John Garner, Josh Menslage, every Thursday afternoon from April through August.
Worked on abs and back muscles to keep my posture better for race days.
Trained at very high altitude for 6 weeks up to race. Very good to do.
Race day, I took 8 gels and used em all. Drank at aid stations, took 10 ounces of water and 4 salt tabs. Took 2 tabs at BC. 2 more just above 3 mile sign. Pretty much stuck with Chaz Lalonde from 7.8 to top.
Tried to keep HR at 155 BPM the whole race. Ended up with AVG of 152 so not too bad there. Problem was that it dropped below 150 for most of the last three miles. Collapsed at end of race, got dragged to medical, got o2, got the hell off the mountain.
Things Done Wrong:
Needed 2 more salt tabs for the last mile. Cramped pretty bad at that point. Just gutted it out.
Went out too fast--BIG SHOCK!! Matt says it every year. I hear it, but I dont LISTEN to it. So, went out hard, and when it hurt, I couldnt speed up. DAMNIT!!!
Got a sharp rock in my shoe just before No Name. had to stop and dump it out. 35-45 seconds lost.
Forgot to get my free doughnut at the top.
Took off my shirt after GSs near summit cuz I was fricken hot. Not that it was wrong, but apologies to Marathon Foto, and any other photographers for the damage my pasty white shell might have done to your cameras.
Comments on Calculator:

GET ME OUTTA HERE
Any Other Stuff:
Overall, happy with result. Ws were a mess and hard to keep footing with ruts and washouts. Aid stations were excellent as usual. Volunteers ROCK! Thanks Tracy for slapping me on the back at the end. No, I dont remember what I said, but thanks for reminding me.

Pikes Peak Marathon Manitou Springs, CO 08/21/2011
Don Solberg reports:
Distance: 26.21
Goal: Better than last year
Results: 5:02:51
Website: http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org
General Summary:
Everybody knows this one.
Things Done Right:
Did not go out too fast, finally drank and fueled enough to get me through, didnt fall but came close many times, didnt need an IV at end of race.
Things Done Wrong:
Due to an injured ankle wasnt able to get many long or high elevation runs as I would have liked over last couple months.
Any Other Stuff:
Just want to say thanks to the Incline Club, it has been great running with you all this year. Thanks for the great training and all the advice. GREAT JOB to everyone this weekend! You all did GREAT! Cant wait till we start again.
***********************************************
Pikes Peak Marathon Manitou Springs, CO 8/21/2011
John Garner reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: Keep the runners happy
Results: Success
General Summary:
The PPM: A from here to there and back again course that we all know and love. 1.2 miles from the turnaround point at approximately 13,300ft sits the cirque aid station. A no-mans land between the safety of the summit and the oxygen rich environment of the forest below.
My job was simple, with no real prior aid station experience, take on the role of the aid station lead and pretend that I knew what I was doing. Kind of like the old reality show Faking It, but without the fabulous prizes at the end and 729 judges instead of just 3.
Things Done Right:
Woke up in time despite doing the Ascent the day before.
Didnt drive the van over the edge of the highway while gawking at the sunrise.
Got everybody down to the site and setup before Matt came running by.
Brought a boom box with a cassette adapter and my iPod to make sure we had some good tunes to dance to for 5+ hours. http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org/boarddetail.asp?Id=12692 has the full playlist.
Made sure that the first song on the playlist would be Lose Yourself and started it just before Matt ran through.
Stayed out of Matts way when he came back down.
Got the van back down while managing a respectable 55 degrees on the breaks (ambient temp at Glen Cove).
Things Done Wrong:
Confused JV with GZ when he came through.
Any Other Stuff:
The aid station crew was simply awesome. Everybody pitched in, took care of the small stuff, had a good sense of humor and seemed to enjoy themselves, even when it started to hail.
***********************************************
PPM/PPA Volunteer Double Manitou Springs, CO 8/20-21/2011
Larry Miller reports:
Distance: 12.7 miles plus
Goal: live to tell about 2 days on top
Results: I did it
General Summary:
On Ascent day the weather on top was too warm, and saw some real ugly things, like Mike E. without a shirt.
Marathon day the weather was just right. On top that is, and no ugly.
Things Done Right:
Went on top of the Peak several times and did 4 hours of trail cleanup the week before. Thanks for the help Roger and Dan.
Things Done Wrong:
Did not drink enough beer afterward. All of the runners drank it and there wasnt any for me.
Comments on Calculator:
Yes and it was right on. Started early and finished at 3:30
Good job Incliners.
Any Other Stuff:
The finisher of the Ascent most likely did not notice how clear the finish line was. Nobody right on them getting pull tags.

Leadville Trail 100 Run Leadville, Colorado 08/20/2011
Andy Wooten reports:
Distance: 100 Miles
Goal: Finish Sub 30
Results: 27:59:11
Website: http://www.leadvilleraceseries.com/page/show/311976-leadville-trail-100-run
General Summary:
100 Mile run starting in Leadville which is an out and back course.
Things Done Right:
Ive had a good training year and though LT100 was not in my plans this year just glad that I got in and was able to run.
Things Done Wrong:
Well a taper would have been nice. I went with an 84 mile week the week before and a 20 mile run the Monday before the race. No chance to taper as I didnt know that I was going to run (actually in the race) until four days before.
***********************************************
Leadville Trail 100 Run Leadville, Colorado 08/20/2011
Wes Thurman reports:
Distance: 100 miles
Goal: 24:59:59
Results: 27:44:20
Website: http://www.leadvilleraceseries.com
General Summary:
I finished my first 100. It could have been better, it could have been a DNF! My quads which served me so well for 50 miles at the San Juan 50 started giving out at mile 35. I regrouped at mile 40 and got some trekking poles to help manage the 60 miles of pain to come. I stayed slow and steady the rest of the way passing lots on the uphills and giving a lot back on the downhills.
Things Done Right:
I dug deep and finished after considering dropping at the 40 mile mark.
Things Done Wrong:
I overworked my quads over the past two months and wasnt fresh for race day.
Any Other Stuff:
The course was extremely well marked and the volunteers were awesome all day and night.
