Im going to say this because I know my fans like my brutal honesty. Every year, all the competitors go out to the bar and try to get me drunk so I cant run the next day. It didnt work this time."

Lost Jacket:
***********************************************
A despondent individual apparently left an orange rain jacket in the car of an ICer a weekend or so ago after hitching a ride from Glen Cove back down to Manitou. If you happen to be the one who picked up the jacket, please contact me at (email removed to prevent spam) so I can put you in touch with its owner.

Remaining IC Sunday Workouts:
***********************************************
Since Im still getting emails saying they didnt see anybody at 8am... the Sunday Club runs will now start at 7:30 from Memorial Park. Once there you have several options:
1) Run up Barr Trail to either the summit or the typical out and back (Bottomless Pit, A-Frame, etc)
2) Jog up to the Cog and put your name on the list for a ticket to Mt View. The cost is $10 and seats are sold on a space available basis. The train departs at 8am. From there you can run to the summit.
3) Carpool from Memorial Park to the summit and do a 3-2-1 or variation.
4) Carpool from Memorial Park to Elk Park and then run from there to Barr Camp and then to the Summit
Remember that the Pikes Peak Highway does not open until 7:30, so you really dont gain much by going to the tollbooth at 6:45.
***********************************************
Weather Report:
***********************************************
Thursday: Thursday: Low 80s, with a 30% chance of rain.
Sunday: Mid 60s to start, upper 50s when you get to Barr Camp and mid 40s at the summit. Low chance of precip till noon, then it jumps to 30% so be done by then.

Aspen Valley Marathon Aspen CO 07/09/2011
Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: sub 3:25:00
Results: ran 29+ miles in 3:56:00 (approx)
Website: http://www.aspenvalleymarathon.com
General Summary:
A beautiful race in Aspen. All downhill, on smooth dirt paths and some paved paths that went to Basalt via the Rio Grand Trail. A perfect marathon for a PR.
Things Done Right:
Did all my homework regarding logistics. Since it is a point to point course, and I traveled alone, I had to figure out a way to get up to Aspen from Basalt, or vice versa, given that the race had no organized means of transporting the runners. No problem though. There is a wonderful public bus system that got me to the start in less than 20 minutes. I also had all my stuff ready to go for the morning, which was good since I didnt get my wake up call, and my alarm didnt go off. I found out that I can run without make up if absolutely necessary. During the race, I paced myself, pushed a bit harder during the first half, since I was going to try and break 3:25:00. My marathon PR is 3:26:00, just two weeks after finishing the LT100, in 2009. This strategy worked well, and I was in line for a sub 3:20:00, when I made the mistake of...
Things Done Wrong:
Listening to the volunteer who pointed all the front running females, and a few of the men, in the wrong direction, therefore adding about 3 miles or so to our course. It was the hardest three miles, with all the climbing that was on the course. Having this happen less than two miles from the finish was devastating. Youd think after sending half a dozen people the wrong way, and having them yell at you, and tell the other volunteers at the final aid station, where there is the potential to go three different directions, they would have figured it out by the time my stodgy ultra body got there, because there were some sub-3 hours women there. Sadly, none of the women got a sub 3 hour, due to this one volunteer. A cheap sign pointing the way would have been way more helpful than her. It was really hard to be motivated after that. However, the RD was very understanding, and offered to make things right, and she did, which I appreciate, especially given the stupid, poorly marked, unorganized, unsafe race th
at I attempted to run in Pine the following weekend. Still, I ended up running about 29 miles in approx. 3:56:00 (I cant find the official results yet), which would translate to a 50km PR if I had kept going.
Any Other Stuff:
Great course, lovely medal, well organized, other than the course not marked well at the one major intersection less than two miles from the finish. It was a fantastic, low key race, and the RD is very nice, unlike the next weekends race in Pine. I would run it again, and recommend it as a good first time marathon, or PR course, if you can handle altitude, and dont need your hand held with transportation, and the course is marked better in a few places. The views were amazing, and you got to run along this amazing river, hear the water, along with all kinds of birds and wild flowers.

Leadville Silver Rush Leadville, CO 07/17/2011
Phil Redinger reports:
Distance: 50 mile (or so)
Goal: To Finish
Results: I finished under the cutoffs
Website: http://www.leadvilleraceseries.com/
General Summary:
This is a nice 50 mile (or so) race outside of Leadville CO. It doesnt follow the Leadville 100 route but heads more to the east. Very pretty course with a few intense hills as well. Well run race. I was worried that Lifetime would change it too much, but it seems that Ken is still running the show.
Things Done Right:
This wasnt my first 50, but after my implosion at Collegiate Peaks this year I wanted to prove to myself that I could still run a 50. This race for me was as much mental as physical. I kept a positive outlook and pushed a little harder through the hard spots.
Gear: Perfect
Hydration/electrolytes: Much better
Nutrition: Much improved, but always could be a bit better.
Things Done Wrong:
Lack of correct training. I really over booked myself this year with races. They all sounded like a good idea during signup, but there are just too many. I havent been able to train for each race like I should. I thought I could use each race as a traning for the next one, however, it doesnt work out that well. Each race needs specific training if you want to do well. With too many races, I havent had the time to devote to each race. So my lesson of the year, pick a few good races and work hard on them. Dont try and do them all in one year.
Any Other Stuff:
My only negative regarding this race was the trash on the course. I havent ever seen a race with so much litter. GU wrappers everywhere. I dont know if it was the runners, or the Bikers from the 50 mile ride the day before. Either way, it was much more the one person could pick up while running. Sad to see in such a pretty setting.

Gold Rush 9 Mile Mountain Race Victor, CO 07/17/2011
Brianne Pierson reports:
Distance: 9 miles
Goal: have fun
Results: 1st overall female
Website: http://www.victorcolorado.com/GRD/goldrushraceform.pdf
General Summary:
Fun alternative to the BTMR. Race was run mostly on wide gravel mining trails and roads of the historic mining town of Victor. Very scenic. Altitude went from 9693 to 10,800. A tough, steady climb on the way out. Ended up getting first overall female. Hardware included a 1/4 oz. gold coin mounted on a large rock, native to the mines of Victor, and a silver commemorative coin mounted on a slightly smaller rock for my age group award. Very small race, route could have been better marked but all in all a fun, small locals race.
Things Done Right:
Pushed hard from the start and continued effort throughout race. Stayed hydrated from the get-go as it was pretty hot at the start. I didnt fall!
Things Done Wrong:
I was by myself toward the end and had some trouble negotiating the course. There could have been more flags or arrows at tricky trail intersections. A helpful volunteer steered me in the correct direction.
Any Other Stuff:
The majority of runners went off course at some point. I am proud to say, despite my poor navigational skills, I ended up being one of the only runners to stay on the course and not cut the course short or run it long. (sorry Kevin! Coolest race award Ive ever won!)

Barr Trail Mountain Race Barr Trail 07/17/2011
Dan Cockrell reports:
Distance: 12.6 miles
Goal: Under 2:20:00
Results: 2:17:56
General Summary:
It was HOT! Overall it wasnt that bad, but still not what I wanted. Lots of ICers out there as usual. Some had great a great day, most had a rough day though due to the heat. Trail conditions were OK considering the rains we have had recently. Aid stations ended up fine, but the scare at the start regarding a possibility of no water at Bobs road freaked many out. Loved the land of OZ and that stupid flying monkey! Volunteers were great of course.
Things Done Right:
Slept well, hydrated well, fueled well. Ran steady, for conditioning level, to Barr Camp. Never really blew-up, just felt like I was stuck in 2nd gear the whole way. Best of all, another race down in which I stayed right side up.
Things Done Wrong:
This year seems to be fighting me as races get close. Goal for the season was to go under 2:10:00 for this race. Due to lack of training miles (injury) I was not 100% coming into the BTMR. I ran too hard the first 3 miles down. Paid for it the last 3 miles down. Quads feel like a 5 lb sledge was used on them. Probably should have laid off of the Kitchen tile install over the last few weeks. Kitchen looks great though!
Any Other Stuff:
The race was of course still awesome as it gives it all back to the community. The website changes and minor management changes this year were evident and many did not like these changes. Specifically the website has lost something in user interface. Results are still not up as of Tuesday and I have never seen so many people so upset over finisher key chains not being given out. Still a lot of fun though.

Barr Trail Mountain Race Barr Trail 07/17/2011
Don Solberg reports:
Distance: 12.6
Goal: Under 1:57 or at least under 2hrs
Results: 2:03:51
Website: http://runpikespeak.com
General Summary:
All that hard training! I went in to the race feeling my fitness was much improved from last year. I really thought a PR was in my cards but the Barr Trail thought different! I knew 10 minutes into the ws I was done! Never really recovered until the flats and downhill. I probably went out too fast. Well maybe next year! Good job to all the other club members who ran great!
Things Done Right:
Nothing
Things Done Wrong:
Everything
Any Other Stuff:
Again great volunteers and aid stations for this event. Bummed about no key chains!
