Remaining IC Sunday Workouts:
***********************************************
With the exception of Race Days (SRTR, BTMR, etc), The Sunday club runs will now start at 7:30 from Memorial Park. Once there you have several options:

1) Run up Barr Trail to either the summit or the typical out and back (Barr Camp, Bottomless Pit, A-Frame, etc)

2) Jog up to the Cog and put your name on the list for a ticket to Mt View. The cost is $10 and seats are sold on a ‘space available’ basis. The train departs at 8am. They will drop you off at Mt View, an easy mile from Barr Camp. From there you can run to the summit.

3) Carpool from Memorial Park to the summit and do a “3-2-1” or variation.

4) Carpool from Memorial Park to Elk Park and then run from there to Barr Camp and then to the Summit

5) The Matt Special: Jog up to the Cog and get a ticket to Mt. View ($10). Run (and we mean RUN!, not “run”) to the summit and then ride back down on the same train that brought you to Mt. View. (Ok, so it is really cheaper to find another way off the summit, but given how some of the tourists drive... the cog is safer.)

Weather Report:
***********************************************
Thursday: Mid 80’s with a 12% chance of precip.

Sunday: In Manitou, it will be in the mid 60’s at the start, warming up to the lower 80’s. On the summit, it will be partly cloudy in the mid to upper 40’s with moderate (10mph) winds and a 2% chance of precip before noon.

Peter A. Tonsits reports:
Distance: 50 miles
Goal: Finish in Top 50 + Break 12 Hour mark
Results: 66th overall / 12:34:51
Website: http://web.me.com/grayj923/San_Juan_Solstice_50_Mile_Race/Welcome.html

General Summary:
Stressful few weeks leading up to the race, but found myself on the starting line ready to go. This year’s race featured an alternate course because of the snowpack in the San Juans and the runoff which may have made the stream crossings lethal! Don’t let that fool you though... the consensus was that this year’s course was tougher... although we didn’t get up quite as high, there were 4 climbs instead of 3 and my Garmin clocked the course at 51.18 miles.

This year (only my second ultra) was not as pleasant an experience as last year’s race (my first ultra). Suffered from stomach issues right out of the gate on the first climb out of Lake City.

Just a few miles into the race on the beginning of the descent from upper Vickers we were following a very established trail. I had a group of about 10 runners or so 100 yards ahead of me on the trail. I came to a bunch of branches that were spread across the trail and I hopped over them and then immediately thought “wait a second, that’s a weird place for an obstacle, and branches across the trail usually mean DON’T GO THIS WAY” I glanced to my left at the valley/meadow below with no established trail, but saw a marker about 20 yards down the hill...I yelled to the runners in front of me but the last one of the group was just about to slip into the next area of forest and he couldn’t hear me. I headed down the valley and kept looking back to see if the runners behind me followed my lead, and noticed the markers as well. They did, and I held up a little until the next runner caught up to me. He assured me that we were going the right way and after two other runners caught up to us and confirmed that we were indeed headed the right way, I felt much better. Turns out Ultra running legend Karl Meltzer was one of the runners that missed that turn... how does that happen?

Anyway, back to the race... I felt pretty good on the descent to the Silver Coin aid station at 11.5 miles. I saw Harry Harcrow who was waiting for his wife Gina to come through the aid station and he asked me if I was having fun yet? I told him that I wasn’t, but he said not to worry... that the fun would come a little later... I got a good chuckle out of that. The climb on the Silver Coin / Roundtop loop was brutal, and in retrospect, took a lot out of me. Long’s Ranch was definitely good training for this loop. I finally purged my stomach issues on this second climb of the day and felt great on the descent. It was a hot day though, much hotter than last year, I felt, and by the time we got back to the Silver Coin aid station at 22.55 miles (5:07:23 for me) I felt pretty much spent, and could have dropped at that point. Harry asked me again if I was having fun yet? This time I was even more convinced that I wasn’t!

I picked up the pieces after leaving the aid station and maintained a pretty steady pace to the next aid station at the base of the third climb.

I probably felt the best I had felt for most of the day on this climb and kept up a brisk pace. I did most of this ascent totally solo, getting passed by one woman early on, and then getting caught by a couple of runners near the top of the climb. One memorable thing for me on this ascent was that in training I did a 30 mile run in about 8 hours, 30 minutes. I hit the 30 mile mark on this section in 6 hours, 35 minutes!)

Felt good on the descent to the Slumgullion aid station at mile 40, but nowhere near as great as I did in 2010. However, I made it into Slum about 4 minutes faster than 2010 and was mentally ready for the final climb up Vickers to 11,000+.

Kept up a steady pace going up Vickers and actually passed people instead of getting passed like last year, but I was starting to deteriorate quickly. Across the top of Vickers I just willed myself to run, especially across the open spaces, so that anybody in visual contact behind me would not be able to tell how bad I was hurting. I saved my bouts of suffering for the more heavily forested sections.

I made the aid station at 46.5 and continued to will myself to run the descent down to town. I told myself, “just make it back to the road in town and you’ll be OK.” Well, I made it to the road in town and then just had nothing left...the tank was empty... I tried several times to get some form of running going again but I was only able to manage some very brief stretches of “running.” I gave up a handful of places in that final stretch in town but I eventually made it to the finish line 1 minute and 42 seconds faster than 2010!

I should have opted for an IV and a couple of bags of fluid, but I chose to recover the hard way. Spent most of the evening lying on the floor back in our cabin until I felt well enough to manage a shower and climb in bed.

Things Done Right:
I think I nailed my training and taper.

Things Done Wrong:
I seem to have hydration/electrolyte/calorie issues during endurance runs so I will have to do more experimenting, as I seem to end up with the IV afterward, more often than not. (According to my Garmin I burned 9,241 calories on the day!)

Probably went out too hard again! Raced it from the get go and again I paid the price over the final 10 miles. Next time I will have to force myself to cruise the first half and hammer the second half.

Wore my Garmin this year and decided I didn’t like having it. I felt like it made the miles pass very slowly in comparison to last year. Next time I will race without the Garmin.

Hellacious Trail Challenge — Palmer Park, Colorado Springs, CO — 6/26/2011

Don Solberg reports:
Distance: 9ish miles
Goal: 1:12:00
Results: 1:14:14
Website: http://www.brccoloradosprings.com/

General Summary:
9 mile race through Palmer Park up and down. Great course.

Things Done Right:
Steady pace, drank enough for that distance. Didn’t hurt myself.

Things Done Wrong:
Could have pushed more.

Any Other Stuff:
Shawn Finley does a great job. Course was marked great, great volunteers. This race will get bigger every year. Great Job!

Hellacious Trail Challenge — Palmer Park, Colorado Springs, CO — 6/26/2011

Thomas Dinwoodie reports:
Distance: 9+
Goal: 1:22:XX
Results: 1:30:56
Website: http://www.brccoloradosprings.com/hellacious-news-thumbs.html

General Summary:
The course is challenging with a number of hills over 1150ft of elevation change over the 9 miles, not bad for a park in the middle of town. The race was well staffed with 4 water stations and course marshals all along the route. I personally improved my time over last year by 22 minutes.

Things Done Right:
Trained well for the hills thanks to club runs. Didn’t run on Sat before the race.

Things Done Wrong:
Went out a little too fast but not so much that I couldn’t recover.

Any Other Stuff:
I hope next year's race starts earlier, the 7am start makes for a hot finish for most of the field.
