Good Evening Incline Club!

The race season is now in full swing, with reports coming in from 3 corners of the state.

Please note that the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is this weekend, Sunday June 26th. If you intend to run to the summit, you will not be able to hitch a ride or take the Cog back down. You have been warned. (And yet each year somebody discovers this the hard way.)

This week Anita gets close to the Stanley Hotel and decides to run faster; Phil, Tim and Mary find a flat 14’er to run up; Andy and Wes decide that the summer solstice makes a good reason to run 50 miles and I play the role of RD and Bethany gets suckered into running it.

Estes Park marathon — Estes Park, CO — 06/12/2011

Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: 4 hours
Results: 4:01:11/ 4th female overall, first place masters
Website: http://www.epmarathon.com

General Summary:
Used this as another training run for some hundreds I have coming up in the fall. As usual, very well organized, family friendly, and challenging course .

Things Done Right:
Took it easy from the start, didn’t put any pressure on myself to compete, as I’ve been dealing with some burn0out issues this year. Felt great the second half. Brought my own water bottle, so I could get around the crowds at the water stations early on.

Things Done Wrong:
Didn’t push hard enough, and kind of regret it, because I could have easily come in third overall woman, after seeing I was only 2 minutes behind her at the finish.

Any Other Stuff:
Tough climb at the end. Really good pizza at the finish. Nice awards too. This course is really varied and changes direction a lot, so it is hard to see how far ahead someone is, unless you have crew. The organization is outstanding.

Mount Evans Ascent — Mount Evans, CO — 06/18/2011

Phil Redinger reports:
Distance: 14.5
Goal: 3:15
Results: 3:41
Website: http://www.racingunderground.com/mtevans/index.html

General Summary:
This was my first time on this course. It was an interesting change from the PPA. Over all it was fun except for the bleep’n wind. At times I was walking head down and I felt like I was being pushed backwards. A touch of snow at the start and a little cold up top. However, a very well run race and great support from volunteers and staff.

Things Done Right:
I went into this race with a “just have fun” attitude. That always makes for a fun race. I felt like I ate well, dressed OK and did fine considering the weather.

Things Done Wrong:
I went without my usual hand bottle and used my Nathan pack for hydration. I still have a hard time knowing how much I have had to drink without being able to see the bladder. I started with 50 oz water and ended up with 25. I was not dehydrated, but I really could have used to drink a bit more.

Mount Evans Ascent — Mount Evans, CO — 06/18/2011

Tim Virgo reports:
Distance: 14.33 miles
Goal: Do better than last time
Results: 3:10:51 9th/24 in M55-59. 1 minute better
Website: http://www.racingunderground.com/mtevans/index.html

General Summary:
Road race to summit of Mt. Evans. 4410’ of ascent finishing at 14,264’. Bit of snow at the start but then clear skies all the way. Very windy. Switchbacks alternating into and away from the wind. Hard to make headway into the wind.

Things Done Right:
Before race: Several Sunday runs to the A-frame so I was ready for the altitude.
During race: Had target pulse rate and stuck to it. Took Enduralytes and shot bloks on schedule, so my leg muscles didn’t seize up like last time.

Things Done Wrong:
Let the wind whip a whole packet of Shot Bloks out of my hand. Didn’t run fast enough on the down-wind sections.

Any Other Stuff:
Smaller, lighter runners took a heavy buffeting from the wind. I did not have that problem, I attribute this to many years of focused carb loading and tapering.

Mount Evans Ascent — Mount Evans, CO — 06/18/2011

Mary Toman reports:
Distance: 14.5 miles
Goal: 3:10-ish
Results: 3:19
Website: http://www.racingunderground.com/mtevans/index.html

General Summary:
Great race to get up high in June. Brutal winds but what’s new in CO this year.

Things Done Right:
I’ve said this before: Trained w/ Incline Club

Didn’t let the wind beat me down (like Winter Series IV)

Things Done Wrong:
Forgot my gloves but had enough layers so I wasn’t miserable

San Juan Solstice 50 — Lake City, CO — 06/18/2011

Andy Wooten reports:
Distance: 50 miles
Goal: Finish
Results: 12:31
Website: http://web.me.com/grayj923/San_Juan_Solstice_50_Mile_Race/Race_Info.html

General Summary:
Tough course this year as it was rerouted due to heavy snow still in the back country.

Things Done Right:
Never gave up. Suffered the first 30 miles but was able to fully capitalize on things once everything started clicking on the climb up Camp Creek.

Things Done Wrong:
Thinking now that maybe I need a bit more simple sugars during a race for mood management.

Any Other Stuff:
I didn’t get to do what I wanted to do in Lake City this year but I still had an awesome run.

***********************************************
San Juan Solstice 50 — Lake City, CO — 06/18/2011

Wes Thurman reports:
Distance: 50
Goal: Sub 11 hrs
Results: 11:29
Website: http://www.lakecity50.com

General Summary:
Arguably, it is the toughest 50 miler, but unquestionably it is the most scenic 50 miler. The views made my first 50 mile race experience well worth it.

Things Done Right:
Took in 307 calories/hr, 66g carbs/hr, 454mg of NA/hr and 22oz water/hr w/o puking!

Things Done Wrong:
I went off course at mile 7. There were a lot of flags on the course. I managed to run downhill for over a mile and failed to notice the lack of flags. #&*%!

Any Other Stuff:
Awesome event. ~13k’ of climbing over 50 miles was very challenging. Hard Rock has ~34k’ of climbing over 100 miles. That’s absurdly challenging.

5k to 10k — San Isabel, CO — 6/19/2011

John Garner reports:
Distance: 5k
Goal: Crush everybody else
Results: Crushed everybody else

General Summary:
This is what happens when IC’ers go on a camping trip with 40 other friends and their kids: we setup a race.

Starting at the end of the foot bridge that marks the entrance to group campsite, the course goes up the road a 1/4 mile to the Cisneros Trail. You stay on this nasty jeep road / trail for 1/2 a mile until you hit the St. Charles Peak trail. At this point the course changes from a 12’ wide road to some sweet singletrack. The turnaround point was at 10,000ft, 1.7 miles into the race. The elevation at the turn around was confirmed by both GPS and the USGS DEM maps (which indicated that it was really at 10,015ft).

Officially billed as a 5k, but in keeping with the tradition that trail races are always either long or short of the advertised distance, this race ended up being 3.4 miles long and dished out 1200ft of elevation gain for an average grade of 13%.

The course was open, so folks could run it whenever they wanted during the day. The honor system was in effect, with a few folks deciding to use BQ style times, and thus neglecting to put in the seconds (not that it mattered in the final results). A large poster-board was used to mark who had run the course and what their times were.

Things Done Right:
Ran the entire route, even the spot that spikes to over 30%. Also managed to get down without taking a digger and came in under 40 minutes.

Any Other Stuff:
Of the 22 adults and 15 kids in the group, we managed to get 9 adults and 1 kid to run the race. For the males, times ranged from 39:41 to 1:15. 2nd Place was 44:11, 3rd just a bit behind at 44:41. The women were clustered at 55:00 -> 60:00.

The turnaround spot was marked with a nice sign as well as a deer skull that I found while running up the trail to place the markers.

Near the top there were two downed trees that, while slowing you down on the uphill, made nice hurdles for the downhill leg.

One camper was not too happy that she was tied for last and had to run it a 2nd time (only to take a long turn and add about 500 yards to her route). Unadjusted, her time was good for 2nd. If I further adjust her for the bad turn then she would be in 1st place. But we all know that if you take a wrong turn on a race, its your problem. :-)

5k to 10k — San Isabel, CO — 06/19/2011

Bethany Garner reports:
Distance: 3.4 miles
Goal: Be top female
Results: Officially, top female

General Summary:
Our annual camping trip with friends usually prevents us from making our Sunday run with the club. This year, John turned it into a race for the whole clan. We started at the Ponderosa campground, ran up the rocky and steep jeep trail and turned onto the Saint Charles Peak trail to climb up some beautiful single track. The turnaround point at 10,000 feet was marked by a deer skull hanging on a tree. It was a tricky downhill with a lot of rocks, roots with deadfall and steep, loose sections.

Things Done Right:
Went out with friends who pushed me pretty hard on the uphill. Had fun pushing them on the down.

Things Done Wrong:
This race was an honor-system based competition. We each wrote down our times when we finished. Was it fair for one of the competitors to go back and try to beat me after she’d already submitted her time? My time was 55:39. Her’s was originally 1:00:00. She went off course the 2nd time through and submitted a time that was 39 seconds faster than me. After John checked her watch stats, it is plausible that she beat me but our times were very close, certainly within 30 seconds of each other.
