Subject: Incline Club News V15 TH #11 LR #30 Garden 10M Recap
Good Evening Incline Club!
It was great to see so many ICers at this Sundays Garden 10 Mile race; both in the race and along the course as Volunteers or spectators. The weather was close to perfect and as a result a lot of you threw down some excellent times. As a reward for your performance, 14 of you even got to walk away with some extra hardware.
The IC season is now 3/4ths of the way done. Now that the Garden 10 miler is behind us, the races will start to come at us much faster than expected. The Summer Round Up is only a few weekends away, the BTMR is only one more after that. We then get a short breather before the PPA/PPM hit us. So review your training schedules and make the most of the limited amount of time you have.

Barr Trail Conditions:
***********************************************
Several folks have written in to note that it is now possible to follow Barr Trail all of the way to the summit. While it is not yet 100% clear, due to the rather dry and hot conditions, it will be soon.

Volunteers Needed:
***********************************************
I would like to thank all of the ICers who pitched in to help make this weekend's GoG 10M a success. I spotted a lot of familiar faces just about everywhere I looked.
Dont forget that they can still use help with the remaining three TCR races. If you or somebody you know is able to volunteer for any of them, go to http://www.thetcr.com/volunteer.asp and fill out the form. Even if you are running there are opportunities to volunteer before and after the race with things like packet pickup and race tear down.

Weather Report:
***********************************************
Thursday: Mid to upper 80s with an 8% chance of precip.
Sunday: 60s at the start, warming up to the upper 70s with a 4% chance of rain. A good day for a long run.

Sunday *s and Race Reports:
***********************************************
Just as a quick clarification: If you are an active member of the club (with at least one Sunday or Thursday run to your name for the year) and you run in Garden of the Gods 10 Mile, Summer Roundup Trail Race, Barr Trail Mountain Race, Pikes Peak Ascent or Pikes Peak Marathon, you do not need to submit a race report just to get your Sunday *.
While we do enjoy reading them there is no need to submit one just to say you ran. We employ a very sophisticated search tool that matches up the names on the Sunday/Thursday *s list with the results from each of the races. This works great if things match. If your IC profile name does not match or you DNFed, drop us a line at (email removed to prevent spam) to alert us to the fact that you ran and well give you credit (and possibly fix your profile name so that it does match).
If you were a volunteer for the race, you just need to send an email to (email removed to prevent spam) to get credit.
If this is as confusing as I make it out to be, ask me or Matt at the next club run and well do our best to further confuse all involved. :~)

This week, John reports from a blue-green lake, Anita takes on a downhill marathon, Michael gets caught up in some spring runoff, Don falls victim to a mis-marked course, Dan gets beat by a beanpole, Thomas runs out of gas on the road while Michael and Mary nail it.

Turquoise Lake half marathon Turquoise Lake 06/04/2011
John Mills reports:
Distance: 13.1
Goal: Finish
Results: Finished
General Summary:
A beautiful race, approx 1/2 road, remaining single track trail, both around Turquoise Lake near Leadville. Highly recommended.
Things Done Right:
Hydrated, fueled. Carried water.
Things Done Wrong:
Not enough time training at altitude.
Any Other Stuff:
Chip timing used. Actually a RF ID tag on the back of the race number. Sparse aid stations water was gone at the 1st aid station when I got there. Big raffle following the race.

Steamboat Springs Marathon Steamboat Springs, CO 06/05/2011
Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: sub 3:45:00
Results: 3:43:16
General Summary:
Ran this race last year and had a nice time, although last year I ran it 12 minutes faster.
Things Done Right:
Was realistic about my finishing time. I knew I wasnt going to run it as well as last year, because I was mentally tired from all Mays races. My legs were tired and heavy, but I tried to remain positive, and just enjoyed the scenery and company. Used it as a training run for a 100 miler I am running in late August.
Things Done Wrong:
Went in too tired to justify the expense. I had anxiety and breathing problems around mile 20, and had to walk part of the hilly section, which is normally where I am strong.
Any Other Stuff:
This race is touted as a downhill course, but this isnt entirely true. There is a really long climb around miles 21 and 22.

Spring Runoff 10K Vail, CO 06/05/2011
Michael Foster reports:
Distance: 10K
Goal: Under 1 hour
Results: 1:16
Website: http://www.tevamountaingames.com/event-detail/10K-Spring-Runoff.aspx
General Summary:
I expected a pretty normal trail run, running up to the ski lifts and back down. Boy was I wrong. There was still quite a bit of snow on the mountains, and in the spirit of the Fall Series, they maximized your time in the snow/mud/water.
We ran 1 mile uphill, crossing a few muddy spots and a snow field, then got some relief downhill on a dry road, then the fun started. The trail would alternate between muddy, to standing water, to snow fields, and back.
The best part was a 1/2 (or more) of downhill on a snow field, I was able to dig in the heels and fly down it. After that there was more mud and water.
Things Done Right:
About a mile in I decided there was no hope to keep the feet dry, so I just had fun splashing around and didnt worry about time.
Things Done Wrong:
Encouraged my wife to do it too. She isnt as big a fan of the trail races, and opted to do this race instead of the Mud Run to try to stay cleaner. Whoops.
Any Other Stuff:
The race was a blast, and the whole weekend in the Teva Mountain Games was amazing. We saw a dog tie the world record dog high jump, and saw some amazing rock wall climbing at dusk.

Turkey Track Trail Marathon Pagosa Springs, Co 06/11/2011
Don Solberg reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: Under 4 hours
Results: 3:42:41 DQ
Website: http://joingecko.com/folders.asp?uid=1
General Summary:
Trail Marathon down in Pagosa Springs. Rolling hills with 1,800ft elevation change. Lots of nice single track with a few technical sections.
Things Done Right:
Last year this was my 2nd marathon ever and first trail marathon. Last year I bonked at mile 20 and limped in for a 4:17. This year I just wanted to improve and go under 4:00. I have had a strained calf so I didnt want to do anything to make it worse. Went out steady and felt good physically the whole race, calf hurt but held up. Took right amount of electrolytes and gels.
Things Done Wrong:
Trail was poorly marked and many people got off course including me. The start/finish line was moved to a different spot due to accommodate parking. Most of old course was used with a couple of added sections. They also did not remove old course markings from last year to add more confusion. Not near enough ribbon was used, intersections were not marked well and no flour on ground. Fairly technical trail drew your attention to the ground so it was hard to keep head up to look for markings. 2 other runners and I got off course right around mile 13. We eventually got back on and actually ran about the same mileage, but we did miss a section of course. The three of us stopped and figured we would probably add another 3-4 miles if we went back and got back on course. None of us wanted anymore mileage for the day and we decide to take a DQ. We got to next aid and told them we got off course and they just told us everyone was off course. Lost desire to run for next 5 miles, but then started to figure I might still
get 26 miles in so I began running harder. Finished strong and came in with 25.65 miles. We all told RD twice we got off course but again he just said everyone did. Still a good run!
Any Other Stuff:
Great trails, volunteers, aid stations and Im sure with all the complications with markings, it will improve next year.

Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Manitou Springs, CO 06/12/2011
Dan Cockrell reports:
Distance: 10 Miles
Goal: Under 1:10:00 and beat John Garner
Results: 1:16:20 and John crushed me!
General Summary:
Not too impressed with my performance this year. Just didnt have the pep in my step to push the right pace. First 2 miles were fine, but fell apart after that. Still finished and didnt pull a calf this year so thats good.
Things Done Right:
Hydration, food, and sleep were good. Even the weather cooperated.
Things Done Wrong:
Raced a 5K on Thursday so probably wasnt smart to push that hard so close to the event. Went out of state twice in the last 3 weeks for conferences/vacation so training miles/intensity were not where they should have been.
Any Other Stuff:
Nice race John and all the other ICers I saw running past me. Thank you to all the volunteers that make these events possible.

Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Manitou Springs, CO 06/12/2011
Thomas Dinwoodie reports:
Distance: 10 miles
Goal: 85 minutes
Results: 86:24
General Summary:
weather and temp were all good, no good reason to not make my goal.
Things Done Right:
starting pace was just about perfect.
Things Done Wrong:
not enough pre-race food I think I just ran out of gas
***********************************************
Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Manitou Springs, CO 06/12/2011
Michael Puig reports:
Distance: 10 Miles
Goal: Under 2 hours
Results: 1:47:22
General Summary:
Established qualifier for TCR series and my 2011 PPA. I need to be more committed and run harder and longer!
Things Done Right:
Showed up
Things Done Wrong:
Radically reduced my training due to work and poor time management
***********************************************
Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Manitou Springs, CO 06/12/2011
Mary Toman reports:

Goal: PR
Results: Yeah, PR by 1 min
General Summary:
Beautiful course
Things Done Right:
Trained w/ Incline club
Things Done Wrong:
Not much happy w/ time
