Subject: Incline Club News V15 TH #10 LR #29 — Garden 10M Volunteers Needed

Good Evening Incline Club!

The Garden of the Gods 10M race is upon us. If you are not yet registered, what are you waiting for? It is by far the most scenic race you will ever do on pavement.

We still have a need for a few volunteers both Saturday morning and on the course Sunday. See below for details.

Rumor has it that a few IC’ers will meet up on Saturday morning at the usual time and place so that they can volunteer on Sunday. (Hint: run for 2 then help Ron assemble the start area.)

Volunteers Needed:
***********************************************
As many of you know, it takes a lot of volunteers to make sure that races like the GoG10M are a success.

In particular, Ron Ilgen needs some assistance with the start area and scaffolding on Saturday morning at 10am. If you are available, please stop by.

For those not running the race, Larry Miller needs assistance with on course marshals. Contact him at fallseries@aol.com

If you or somebody you know is able to volunteer for this or any of the TCR series races, go to http://www.thetcr.com/volunteer.asp and fill out the form. Even if you are running there are opportunities to volunteer before and after the race with things like packet pickup and race tear down.

Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Run:
***********************************************
It is not too late to enter the GoG10M run! You have through June 10th to register online. For those who are real procrastinators and like to spend more, there is also a race day registration option.

And unlike some of those more expensive races up north, this one includes a real shirt. :-)

See http://www.gardentenmile.com/entry.htm for details.

Strawberry Stampede — Pismo Beach, CA — 05/29/2011

Jason Brown reports:
Distance: 10K
Goal: Anything under 49 min
Results: 48:02
Website: http://www.strawberrystampede.com/

General Summary:
The family and I were visiting Pismo Beach while on vacation. As it turns out they have a yearly run over the Memorial Day weekend called the Strawberry Stampede. A nice 10K run over rolling hills and around strawberry fields. The weather was beautiful, sunny and in the low 60’s. There was a great mix of competitive racers and leisure runners. Running at sea level was a blast. The legs never felt fatigued (even when running up hill) and I was able to push my pace. Ended up finishing 54th overall with a time of 48:02 (my previous best 10K time was 49:56).

Things Done Right:
Made this a family event. My wife and twelve year old daughter ran the race with me which made it fun and memorable.

Had a good breakfast and a strong cup of coffee.

Things Done Wrong:
Didn’t have a place to stash the race day shirt that the organizers provided. Didn’t want to lose the souvenir so I ended up running with shirt in hand.

Any Other Stuff:
Loved running at sea level! Not sure how much of an edge that gives you but mentally it made me feel like I could push harder.

Mountaineer Marathon and Half Marathon — Lake City, CO — 05/22/2011

Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: do both the marathon and half
Results: tired, (won the woman’s in 4:25:50) then did half

General Summary:
This was my final race before I officially turned 40 on the 23rd. I also ran the half marathon after crossing the finish line of the marathon, making 39.3 miles, and then did .7 to make 40 miles, to “celebrate” turning 40 the next day.

Things Done Right:
Started out at a moderate, even pace, and was actually in last place for marathon, until the turnaround. The women ahead of me were still in their 20’s, and had to be beaten. But turning into an old fart, my body wouldn’t let me dash out from the get go. I had to start out slowly, on this beautiful, scenic course, which was all on dirt road in Lake City. We went by numerous avalanche falls, and from the looks of things, I was glad I wasn’t running the Lake City 50. Lots of snow. I loved the look on the face of the 20 something year old’s face when she saw the “Old Lady” catch her at the turnaround. We chatted a bit, and I pretended I didn’t want to beat her, but this was my last race before turning into a “master’s runner,” and I was going to make it count. I took off, and ended up beating her and the other 20 something year old by nearly 30 minutes, and even had a few birthday cookies, but no cake. As soon as I crossed the finish line, I turned around and did the half, although not competitively, doing them both in just over 7 hours.

Things Done Wrong:
Had birthday cookies. Carbs are not my friend, as I grow older.

Any Other Stuff:
Mostly uphill on the outbound, and downhill on the inbound. it went up to over 10,400 feet, and was absolutely beautiful. The RD was still in high school, trying to raise money for his school’s physical fitness program, and he did a great job. I hope he puts it on again next year. The first place male and female got custom made paintings by a local artist.

Salida Bluegrass Music marathon — Salida, CO — 05/29/2011

Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: finish in top three
Results: 4:03:40 (won woman’s)
Website: http://www.salidaraces.org

General Summary:
This was my first race as a masters runner, and a brand new race. It was to be a very demanding experience. Winds kicked up to over 40 mph, often a head wind, and since the race didn’t start until 9 am, it got really hot.

Things Done Right:
Brought a water bottle! Those who didn’t paid dearly. The aid stations were OK, but far enough apart that on such a hot windy day going 4 miles without fluid would dehydrate you. More than one runner quit at the half marathon point due to the high winds. I thought I was in second, until my husband told me I was first. We fought about that for 8 miles. Seriously. I could have swore I was in second, even some of the runners told me so. The wind was every bit as bad as those I experienced for four years at Edwards AFB, CA, so maybe the wind blew her away. Anyway, it was one of those races where I just wanted to get it over with.

Things Done Wrong:
Didn’t fuel enough during the race, and was tired and depleted for days.

Any Other Stuff:
Great Blue Grass music afterward, and the awards were nice too. Some long, sustained climbs into the headwinds reduced me to a walk, and turning around and doing the course in the reverse direction wasn’t easy with all the wind and heat.

Golden Gate Dirty 30 — Golden Gate State Park, CO — 06/04/2011

Phil Redinger reports:
Distance: 50k
Goal: 7-7:30
Results: 7:35
Website: http://goldengatedirtythirty.com

General Summary:
I was not sure what I would find when I signed up for this race. However, it turned out to be a GREAT race. One of the most beautiful courses I have run, incredible aid stations and volunteers, and even a cool race shirt. This race was very well put on and it is now one of my favorites. The course is harder than I expected but a lot of fun. Even the after race area was well done. Over all I would suggest this race to anyone who wants the challenge of a 50k. This was trail running at its best.

Things Done Right:
Up until the 26 mile mark or so, I was doing great on nutrition, hydration, and pacing. I felt really good most of the race and the lessons learned from earlier in the year paid off. No gear related issues either.

Things Done Wrong:
I made the mistake of refilling my hand bottle at the second to last aid station with sports drink. I know better and anything but water makes my stomach go south pretty quick. Sure enough, within a mile or two I had lost it all. I guess that will teach me to pay more attention to what the labels say at the aid stations.

Golden Gate Dirty 30 — Golden Gate State Park, CO — 06/04/2011

Donald Hawkins reports:
Distance: 50K
Goal: finish
Results: 7:35:33
Website: http://www.goldengatedirtythirty.org/

General Summary:
I had heard good things about this race so figured it would be a good one to do. VERY beautiful course. Mostly single track. Looking at the elevation profile you wouldn’t think the climbs are that bad. WRONG!
They call it a technical course. They are right.

Things Done Right:
Stayed with a fellow IC’er at his Father’s place in Denver the night prior.
Nutrition was almost perfect.
My hydration is getting better.

Things Done Wrong:
Got dehydrated a little just after the mid-point of the race.
Went out too hard, particularly on the down hills. Paid for it later.

Any Other Stuff:
The aid stations were great. The volunteers at them were some of the best I’ve seen.
