Subject: Incline Club News V15 LR #17 Registration Day
Good Evening Incline Club!
Registration day is upon us. For those who have stepped up to the plate and already registered.... Congratulations, you have joined the few, the proud, the slightly insane (especially the marathon folks).
For those still on the fence: act now, the limited supply of slots is almost all gone. And if you want to run in the marathon, your options are now limited.

Barr Trail Conditions Report:
***********************************************
Last week we had a touch of ice on Ruxton above the gate then nothing till the top of the Ws. Then there were a few easily negotiable spots above that to Noname. From there the first few switchbacks were covered but it was a mix of dirt and packed snow above that. This weeks warm weather will probably result in more of the ice going bye-bye.

Weather Report:
***********************************************
As of right now, Sunday appears to be aiming for a nice start in the low 40s but warming up nicely to the mid 50s by end of the run. It should be a nice day for a run.

Race Reports:

This week, Donald reports from the windswept fields of northern El Paso County and then joins Don and Steve for a run down memory lane while Mike reports from the race through a series of tubes that we all know as the interwebs.

2011 Winter Series IV Black Forest 02/26/2011
Donald Hawkins reports:
Distance: 20K
Goal: finish at marathon pace
Results: 1:43:29 (nowhere close)
Website: http://www.pprrun.org/results/2011_results/2011_winter_series_IV_20k.htm
General Summary:
My first year running it. Nice route, EXCELLENT organization and volunteers.
Things Done Right:
Stopped to try to help someone who had rolled an ankle and dropped out in the first mile. I didnt do anything other than watch and wait for search and rescue (who came quick) but they say the thought counts.
Things Done Wrong:
Ran against the wind. I guess it was good training though. They warned us about the wind, but that does not mean that I needed to like it.
Any Other Stuff:
Fun course, rolling hills, and did I mention that Mother Nature helped out my training with WIND.

Run Through Time Marathon Salida, CO 03/12/2011
Donald Hawkins reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: 4:00-4:30 ish
Results: 5:14
Website: http://www.salidarec.com/ccrc/run-through-time-photos/2011-Run-Through-Time-Race%20Results-Marathon
General Summary:
My third year running this, second for the full marathon. They changed the course this year. It is mostly on roads for the first half, then hits jeep trail until mile 20 or so where it turns off from the prior year's course and becomes rolling single track.
Things Done Right:
Did MUCH better in the first half than last year. Was easily at my goal pace. Didnt walk any and kept a good pace until the half way point.
Brought my Camel Back unlike last year.
Good training run.
Things Done Wrong:
Did MUCH worse in the second half (which is mostly down-hill). I think I got dehydrated and lost all will to run at around mile 21 or so. And unlike the prior years course, it was not all down-hill from that point. It came down to just wanting to make it back and not knowing if I would or not.
Any Other Stuff:
Due to the course change they added aid stations at mile 20 and 23.6. Prior years the last aid was at I think 17 or so. It was warmer this year, but we did not have all the snow after turning off 175 like last year.

Run Through Time Marathon Salida, CO 03/12/2011
Don Solberg reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: Under 4hrs
Results: 4:03:13
Website: http://www.salidarec.com/ccrc/index.htm
General Summary:
Marathon run mostly on dirt roads and some single track that is new for this course. Lot of ups and downs.
Things Done Right:
Hydration and fuel.
Things Done Wrong:
2nd marathon in 6 days. I felt like a slug the whole race. Did only 1 run since my last marathon and thought I would be fine. I knew during the first mile it was gonna be a long day.
Any Other Stuff:
Great Race! Nice course. Volunteers and meals were great.

Run Through Time Marathon Salida, CO 03/12/2011
Steve Bremner reports:
Distance: Marathon
Goal: under 4 hours
Results: 4:22
Website: http://www.salidarec.com/ccrc/Run-Through-Time-Marathon.htm
General Summary:
Perfect day for running a trail marathon in Colorado in winter. The trail was mostly dry, the sun was shining, and temps were mild. No excuses. The first eight miles climbs 2,000 feet on an easy Rampart Range Road-like grade, then its rollers for a few more miles, followed by a jeep track up to about mile 20. Six miles of single track mostly downhill to the finish. I ran out of gas on the last few miles. Good wake up run to start the season.
Things Done Right:
Ate a gel.
Things Done Wrong:
Probably shouldnt have accelerated in miles 18-20.

Pikes Peak Ascent Registration Active Dot Com 03/16/2011
Michael F Everson reports:
Distance: To Infinity (and beyond)
Goal: Not get lost
Results: I am found
Website: http://www.active.com/framed/event_detail.cfm?CHECKSSO=0&EVENT_ID=1938375
General Summary:
The reverse start really confuses me. Wave 2 gets to go 1/2 hour before Wave 1. There were a bunch of really slow people in Wave 2 and they really backed things up for those of us in Wave 1. I virtually passed 300 people (I think). The fact that I could hardly see the course in front of me made it that much more difficult. More later in Other Stuff...
Things Done Right:
New computers with faster gigs and internet speed really helped over last year. This computer really bytes! I went with the Vibram 5 Fingers this year as I thought lighter would be better in this event.
Things Done Wrong:
Vibrams suck when dealing with furniture. Oak credenza, static floor cover, WHAM!!! Stubbed big toe on Rt foot--Steel toe boots next year. Once again, had some stomach issues.
Any Other Stuff:
OK, so I started off pretty good. This course was much shorter than in years past. However, I got sick to my stomach about half way through. I barfed all over the keyboard and my Khakis. Vibrams leaked and now I had puke in between my toes. Somehow I gotta get these knots out before the event so I dont end up such a mess. I was told my computer had sticky keys, but I dont think this is what they meant--UGHHH!!! So, I grabbed another keyboard from the closet, plugged it in, and continued on. You know the mantra: Go out hard, when it hurts, speed up."
I finished up in 4:14. I was hoping to keep up with John Garner, but he smoked me with a 1:46. Must be from a great Winter Series.
