Front Range Fat Ass Series
***********************************************
Is the Double just not long enough for you? Ever think that the club runs on some great trails but you wish you could link them all together? Well, nows your chance:
The final run of the Front Range Fat Ass series will take place on Saturday, January 15th. No rules, no entry fee, and no whining allowed.
The run will start and end at 321 North 31st Street in Old Colorado City. The course will show you some of the best trails our area has to offer, including the Garden of the Gods, Williams Canyon, Waldo Canyon, Longs Ranch Road, Barr Trail, the Intemann Trail, and Red Rock Canyon. It will be minimally marked, so it would help if you knew where you were going or ran with someone who did.
A description of the 50k course can be seen here: http://antonkrupicka.blogspot.com/2010/11/ponderous-posterior-50k.html
There are other distances offered if you dont feel like running 30+ miles. You can follow the course and cut down Williams Canyon into Manitou and back to Old Colorado City (15ish miles). Or you can head back to Manitou via the Ute Pass trail after running Waldo, skipping out on all the wonderful climbing on Longs Ranch (24ish miles).
If you need anything at an aid station, a truck will leave for the Waldo Canyon trailhead parking lot after the last wave of runners takes off. You are welcome to throw a bag in the back. Other than this minimal aid station you need to bring anything you need to complete the distance.
Well be using three start times, 7AM, 8AM, and 9AM. The 7AM start may be delayed if anyone needs to sign up for the San Juan Solstice.
Ill have lots of PBR at the house after the run, if you want anything else youll have to bring it yourself.

Dog Droppings

Nicole Rosa writes:
Dear Fellow Incline Club Dog Owners,
The bottom of the Incline and Barr Trail is a doggie toilet! I think that we doggie owners need to try very hard to keep it cleaner. Ive decided to start Operation POPUP (pet owners pick up poop). Here are some ideas to help keep the area cleaner:
1) Before you toss your doggie into the car for your trip to Manitou, let him do his morning constitutional in your own yard. Thats one less load on the trail.
2) Bring several plastic bags with you. When you dog unloads, pick it up. Then take the smelly package with you. Sometimes people leave the plastic bag on the trail, which is not ideal. If youre going to come back for it, thats one thing, but littering with poop AND a bag does not help the situation any.
3) If you see another pile on the trail, consider picking it up as well. Think of it as carbon trading credits. You may have inadvertently missed one of your own dogs contributions, but youre making up for it by picking up another.
4) If you see other dog owners not picking up after their pet, politely remind them of Operation POPUP and give them one of your plastic bags if they need one. Ive had people get defensive or outright mean, so be careful. Remind them that the area could be closed to dogs completely if we dont keep it cleaner.
5) If you absolutely cannot pick up your dogs poop, you ran out of bags, whatever, at least grab a stick and flick the stuff off of the trail. Thats not the best case scenario, but at least other people wont be stepping in it.
Thanks and let me know if you have any other ideas.

Suggested Course Overview:
***********************************************
This weeks suggested run is Barr Camp. Its everybodys favorite local trail. Stay on Ruxton when you pass Hydro (1.25 miles), go up a nasty hill, past the gate, turn right, join up with Barr Trail, keep going up, then go up some more, till you see the crazy folks doing the incline and then keep going up till you hit the top of the Ws (1.8ish miles from hydro). Then it is back up, up and more up but you can catch a breather before you go under the rock arch, then go up then up some more till you hit No Name Creek (4 miles total). If you have anything left keep going up till you hit Bobs road, where you get a slight downhill then up down and up till you hit the 7.8 to go sign. Then it is a simple down up down up down up up up till you hit the 1/2 mile to Barr Camp sign. Then it is just up up up till you get to the little cabin in the woods where you can take a quick rest before you get to go down down down :-)
WARNING: If it will take you more than 4 hours or so to finish, do not attempt the full route. Shorten it to just No Name, just the 7.8 sign or some other variant. Once again, is often better to go shorter and harder rather than slower and longer. If you find yourself walking the entire route, try doing a shorter course and run short sections of it, say 1 to 2 minutes at a time along the level or downhill parts. Each week make the sections slightly longer till you find yourself running more than you are walking. (Just dont try to run the super steep parts, that first hill after hydro is made for walking :-)

Race Reports:

This week, Trudy braves the freezing temps in support of EPCSAR.
2011 Rescue Run Palmer Park 01/01/2011
Trudy DeCoronado reports:
Distance: 10K
Goal: finish w/o walking or falling
Results: 1:01:39
Website: http://www.active.com/running/colorado-springs-co/rescue-run-2011
General Summary:
Beautiful day despite the freezing cold-0 degree @ start of race and warmed up to a hot 7 by 11:00 a.m. Mostly snow pack/ice on road dirt trail could have easily wreaked havoc on peoples ankles if they didnt pay attention but overall a great race for me.
Things Done Right:
Ran my race for me and not against myself from 2010. Ran the entire thing this year despite all the snow/ice pack vs last year when I had to walk a lot. Granted my time this year was 4:09 more BUT I ran it and did it in the snow/ice go me! Plus its 1st race since injury so Im happy w/it.
Things Done Wrong:
nothing
Any Other Stuff:
Slick on the road due to the ice and snow pack and especially where the sun doesnt ever hit early in the a.m. but only slipped once coming down on the last tight curve. Not too bad if you paid attention to the ground.
