Subject: Incline Club V14 LR #14 — Barr Camp!

Good Evening Incline Club!

It’s the last run in February!. Which is good because it means we are only a month away from starting up the Thursday evening runs. (And hopefully when February leaves it will take this weather with it :~)

Sunday, Feb 28, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Run to Barr Camp and back via the Barr Trail

Barr Trail Conditions Report
***********************************************
As of Tuesday, it was a slushy mess. That said, there will be more snow tonight so all bets are off as to what it will look like for Sundays run.

***********************************************
Weather Report:
***********************************************
As of right now, upper 20’s to lower 30’s with a 40% chance of snow. This is Colorado so anything is possible given how far out we are and just how unsettled the weather pattern has been this past month.

Race Reports:
***********************************************
Anita continues to rack up the miles with a 50k followed by a 26.2M the next day. Why? Don’t ask.

Pemberton 50km — McDowell Mountain Park, Fountain Hills, AZ — 02/13/10
Lost Dutchman Marathon — Apache Junction, AZ — 02/14/2010

Pemberton 50km — McDowell Mountain Park, Fountain Hills, AZ — 02/13/10

Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 50km
Goal: PR (under 4 hours 53 minutes)
Results: 4:29:55 2nd place overall woman

General Summary:
Perfect weather and record crowds set the tone for this fast, rolling course, which takes place in beautiful McDowell Mountain Park. It was the 10th year of this race, and my second time running it.

Things Done Right:
Went out strong, not too slow, not too fast. The first 7 miles of each loop were a little rocky, and climbing. Lots of various types of cacti not to trip and fall into. Got to the first aid station in 48 minutes, and all aid stations were about 5 miles apart. I was familiar with the course, since I ran this race in 2005, and also ran the Javelina Jundred twice, which is also on the same course. Hydrated early and often, and fueled well, which paid off later with a negative split. The desert always gets windy as the day wears on and temps go up.

Things Done Wrong:
No crew at the aid station that takes you into the second loop, but was expecting one, so I just blew through it thinking my crew would be just outside the AS waiting for me with my stuff. Got about 1 minute outside of the AS and had to turn around to refill my water bottle. This cost me valuable seconds, and possibly first place, which I lost by 85 seconds. So my PR was bittersweet.

Any Other Stuff:
Great course, and great first time ultra. Well stocked aid stations, low key, great food at the end. Next year it will be held 5pm at night, instead of 7 am in the morning, which is great because there are all sorts of marathons in Arizona in February. I met some people who also ran the Lost Dutchman Marathon the next day, myself included, and now with Pemberton being at night, we can all run a Saturday morning marathon, rest a few hours, run the Pemberton 50m Saturday night, then run the lost Dutchman marathon on Sunday.

Lost Dutchman Marathon — Apache Junction, AZ — 02/14/2010

Anita Fromm reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: sub 4 hours
Results: 3:49:48

General Summary:
I ran this marathon as a training run for my first upcoming 100 miler of the year next month. The race ran around the Superstition Mountains and foot hills, and suburbs.

Things Done Right:
Got my sorry butt to the bus on time, with the help of my husband. I can’t tell you how much fun it was getting up at 3:45 am, to get the shuttle bus on time, after running a hard race the day before. I think it takes more out of me to run a 50km or 50 miler competitively, compared to dinking around and taking 7 hours for a 50km.

Things Done Wrong:
Went out too hard, and fell apart around 21 miles. I lost interest once we got out of the mountains and into the suburbs, and forgot my devil music. Why is it you always end up running near somebody who breaths funny or makes weird noises when they run and you forgot your devil music? After 21 miles, I just wanted to finish in time to catch my flight.

Any Other Stuff:
Very well organized race course, great volunteers, and cool finishers medal.
