Incline Club V14 LR #13 — Another Double

Subject: Incline Club V14 LR #13

Good Evening Incline Club!

For those who didn’t make it all the way up to Barr Camp last week, you missed some excellent running conditions above noname. The only downside was that it was 11 degrees with light snow up there at 10am. Thus the only option for most of us who went that far was to run quickly to keep warm.

This week it should be a bit warmer and with March just around the corner, its only going to get better... I hope :-)

NEXT RUN: The Double!
***********************************************
Sunday, Feb 21, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Waldo/LRR double! Run the UPT and then head over and do Waldo Canyon — either way. Next, head up LRR and return via the Barr Trail. 3-4 hours, if it would be longer just do Waldo or LRR.

THIS WEEK’S QUOTE:

Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!

Barr Trail Conditions Report
***********************************************
Below noname was a mix of packed snow, ice, more ice in spots where you don’t want ice and some dirt. The forecast is calling for some more light snow every now and then so all bets are off for what it will look like this weekend.

***********************************************
Weather Report:
***********************************************
Mid 20’s to start with low 30’s to finish. Mostly cloudy with a chance of very light snow. Please note that the entire weather pattern is kinda unsettled so anything is possible.

Race Reports:
***********************************************
This week, Dan runs into a wall in Texas, Michael saves the wales in Maui (uh, sure), and Beverly goes Psycho looking for Toto in Kansas.

Rocky Racoon 100 — Hunstville, TX — 02/06/2010

Dan Burstein reports:
Distance: 100
Goal: Finish
Results: DNF at 80 Miles

General Summary:
Great Course. Not too technical. Good Aid Station Distribution. Great Volunteers. 5 loops of 20 miles. 30 hr time limit.

Things Done Right:
Went out at comfortable pace. Ran with some great people. 80 miles is the furthest I have ever run so I can’t feel too bad about stopping at 80. Enjoyed stumbling, bumbling, and cursing to myself as I waddled from mile 72 to 80 like a drunken wooden legged sailor looking at the trail trough 2 drinking straws!!

Things Done Wrong:
Needed a better light for night running. Not having run on trails at night prior to the race was also a mistake. Should have looked at my left ankle when it started hurting early in race. I might have been able to get it wrapped instead of having it swell to baseball size and slowing down to a waddle!!

Any Other Stuff:
Now I know what a Zombie Runner is!! 80 miles in 23 hrs actually feels pretty good. Next year I’ll be back for more.

Run for the Whales 5k — Kihei, HI — 02/06/2010

Michael Foster reports:
Distance: 5k
Goal: Under 26 minutes
Results: 26:05
Website: http://www.mauiwhalefestival.org/?q=content/run-whales

General Summary:
The Run for the Whales is a hilly 5k which runs from the Makena Beach Resort on Maui, and is part of the larger Maui Whale Festival. The course ran north from the resort for a little over a mile, with a few surprisingly steep hills in it. Unfortunately the miles were not marked after that, but the second mile was also hilly, but more rolling and the third mile was downright flat as we ran back to the resort right next to the beach.

Things Done Right:
Running at sea level!! My lungs felt great! Other than that, I dressed well for it, with all white one, and started near the front, which helped the first mile out a great deal.

Things Done Wrong:
Unfortunately this section is a bit longer! I tied my shoes a bit too tight, I think I was too excited to be in Maui. This cropped up about mile 2, and really made the last few minutes uncomfortable. Fortunately it was only a 5k, so it wasn’t too bad.

I also made the mistake of starting too fast, thinking sea level would help my legs as well as my lungs. The first few steep hills seemed like nothing (thanks to the Waldo runs!) but I ran out of 5k pace mid-way through the last mile and suffered a bit in the heat. Starting slower would have helped the last mile, and probably put me under my goal, which I missed by 5 seconds!

Any Other Stuff:
The course was fantastic, but the race itself wasn’t the most organized. The half marathon started about 45 minutes late, and the 5k did as well. The half marathon course ran right through the start of the 5k, so the 5k had to start to the right while the half marathoners ran past. After the start it was a mad house, and I’m sure some of the half marathoners got caught in it.

Despite that, it was running in Maui, with an ocean view, incredible houses and resorts, and whales in the ocean, no real complaints at all!

Pyscho Wyco — Run Toto Run — Kansas City, Kansas — 02/13/2010

Beverly Weaver reports:
Distance: 10 miles
Goal: Finish — not be last — 3:30 would be nice...
Results: 4:01:25
Website: http://www.psychowyco.com/id7.html

General Summary:
Pyscho Wyco Run Toto Run is on trails around Wyandotte County Lake near where I grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. Each loop is slightly more than 10 miles. There are 3 races: 10 mile, 20 mile, 50K. The terrain is hilly, rocky, icy, muddy with rocks, leaves, roots and tree limbs in the trails and small creeks to cross.

Things Done Right:
I have been running longer every week — running hills and trails. I planned to take it easy and just run this for a training run. The times from previous years made me realize that it would NOT BE FAST.

Things Done Wrong:
Nothing really — if it weren’t for all the ice and mud, my time would have been better.

Any Other Stuff:
Serious MUD. I am talking slippery clay on top of ice, ditches with 6 to 12 inches of mud to get your shoes stuck in, mud up the back of everyone who passed me, mud on our legs, inches of mud on our shoes to weigh us down. This made for a very slow pace — walking mostly on the downhill sections to keep from falling into the depths of it.

I must admit that had some foul words to say in some places

Was glad to finish when I did — and not quite last....
