Subject: Incline Club News V14 LR #11 - Days are getting longer

Good Evening Incline Club!

It was great to see so many of you get up to Barr Camp last week.

January is behind us and the days are starting to get longer and in theory, warmer. The trails are clearing up and it is a great time to get out and run!

NEXT RUN: The Double!
***********************************************
Sunday, Feb 7, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Waldo/LRR double! Run the UPT and then head over and do Waldo Canyon — either way. Next, head up LRR and return via the Barr Trail. 3-4 hours, if it would be longer just do Waldo or LRR.

Barr Trail Conditions Report
***********************************************
Last week it was so nice I ran the entire thing with a pair of road shoes with no traction devices at all. Of course, any snow tonight or this weekend may change that but for now it is all good.

Weather Report:
***********************************************
Starting temps of 30 with a good bit of sky cover and a small chance for some flurries. Of course, it all depends on when the system moves in so it may be warmer or colder. Don't forget that this is Colorado so anything is possible ;-)

Race Reports:
***********************************************
Its marathon (or almost a full marathon) season in IC land.... Charles and Mike go south while Andy goes north.

Houston-Chevron Marathon — Houston, TX — 01/17/2010
Twin Mountain Trudge — Laramie Wyoming — 01/30/2010
Waco Marathon — Waco, Texas — 01/31/10

Houston-Chevron Marathon — Houston, TX — 01/17/2010

Charles Scheibe reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: sub-4:20
Results: 4:25:02
Website: http://www.chevronhoustonmarathon.com/

General Summary:
Loop course, touring the city, starting and finishing at the Convention Center, downtown. Flat course @ sea level. Great fan support, aid stations, and overall administration.

Things Done Right:
Weather was near perfect — clear, slight breeze, starting temps in the low 40s, finishing in the mid 50s. Tapered well. Maintained goal pace through 20 miles. Finished my 104th marathon. Several milestones re: the Houston Marathon (HM) --- 22nd overall, 12th straight, and completing at least one HM in 5 consecutive decades!

Things Done Wrong:
Too much visiting with family and friends beforehand. Drove from Houston to San Antonio to Austin and back to Houston during the 2 days leading up to the race.

Any Other Stuff:
Highly recommended. Course records were set for both men and women this year!

Twin Mountain Trudge — Laramie Wyoming — 01/30/2010

Andy Wooten reports:
Distance: 22 Miles
Goal: Finish
Results: 6:05:14
Website: http://www.d-endeavors.com/trudge.htm

General Summary:
My friend Carolyn who lives up in Denver brought this race to my attention back at the beginning of November as a possible race to run in January. Despite the fact that is is Wyoming, and in the dead of winter and the snow will be a** deep and it will be cold as hell (and windy since it is Wyoming) and it’s a long drive there and back and the logistics for the weekend are just enough to make it a pain in the a**... I said, “Sure... Why not!” Really it was a fun race, with minimal support in a beautiful area. But basically it is a 22 mile race dedicated to art of “post-holing” and there was plenty of that!

Things Done Right:
Everything went well. The weather was great (thankfully). Took all of the right gear, hydration and fueling were dead on for the day.

Things Done Wrong:
Still questioning the fact that I even registered for a race, in Wyoming, in January...

Any Other Stuff:
Seriously a great mid winter race, everyone was friendly and since it is not a big race it is not crowded. There was only one aid station but they had great Scotch.

Waco Marathon — Waco, Texas — 01/31/10

Mike Sandlin reports:
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: Finish
Results: Finished (3:09:12

General Summary:
This was a run to check what kind of condition I am currently in and I found out it is not as good as I was hoping. My time was fine, but I really hurt for the last three miles. Waco is actually a hilly course (Texas standards) and the temperature at the start was 32 degees and got a little cooler by the finish. We actually had snow falling throughout the race, which was a constant reminder of some of our winter Incline Club runs.

Things Done Right:
Even pace throughout the first half of the race and even had thoughts of running a little faster the last ten miles. These turned out to be only thoughts! I can’t believe how sore I am the day following the race. I guess too much hard surface and getting older!

Things Done Wrong:
Should have been running with my ICER’s up to Barr Camp on this day!
