Subject: Incline Club V14 LR #5 — Name Changes and More...

Happy Holidays Incline Club!

It looks like we may have a white Christmas, but that’s not going to stop us from the post holiday run to work off the excess food (and beer) that I know I’ve already managed to consume in the festivities leading up to this holiday season :-)

So think of this Sunday’s run as an early start to your New Year's resolution to be in better shape than you were in ‘09!.

NEXT RUN: Waldo Canyon
***********************************************
Sunday, Dec 27, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Run out the Ute Pass Trail and take a right and head over to do the Waldo Canyon loop in the clockwise direction. Return via the UPT. 2-3 hours, if it would be longer do an out/back.

THIS WEEK’S QUOTE:
***********************************************
It’s lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believed in myself.
-Muhammad Ali

Toy Drive Results:
***********************************************
A big thanks to all of the IC’ers who brought toys for the toy drive. Larry stayed behind and made sure that Santa didn’t have any issues loading all of them into his sleigh.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Run:
***********************************************
Anita Fromm writes:

A big thank you all who helped get the word out about the UCSR. Everyone who ran had fun, and even caught the eye of a reporter from the Gazette, who did a story on it, and can be found in today’s paper. The run somehow managed to catch the eye of other newspapers in the state as well. Again, thank you to those who helped, and those who participated!’

Weather Report:
***********************************************
According to the current forecast, the tea leaves are telling us that the starting temp will be around the mid 20’s and sunny, warming up to the mid 30’s.

***********************************************
Suggested Course Overview:
***********************************************
This week's suggested run is Waldo Canyon.

The full course is approximately 15 miles with 3000ft of elevation gain and a high point of 8100ft. For those who are not yet up to that distance, common ‘out and back’ distances are as follows:

LRR Intersection: 7 miles & 1000ft of gain
Start of the Waldo Loop: 11.5 miles & 2000ft of gain
Bail Trail: Approx 9 miles. (Don’t try this unless you are with somebody who knows where they are going)

Race Reports:
***********************************************
This week, Andy finally recovers from the Leadville Trail 100 to be able to talk about it, Andrea paces her mom through a marathon, Donald runs down in Pueblo, and Craig reverses the slowing trend.

Leadville Trail 100 Run — Leadville, Colorado — 08/22/2009
(2) California International Marathon — Sacramento CA — 12/6/2009
Rock Canyon Half-Marathon — Pueblo, Colorado — 12/05/2009

Leadville Trail 100 Run — Leadville, Colorado — 08/22/2009

Andy Wooten reports:
Distance: 100 Miles
Goal: Finish
Results: DNF mile 48 or so.
Website: http://www.leadvilletrail100.com/home.aspx

General Summary:
This was my first attempt at a 100 mile race. The heat got to me which caused other issues I think. Things went well until Fish Hatchery but then slowly deteriorated for me from there to Twin Lakes. Bounced back after Twin Lakes and had a great climb up Hope Pass. Just after starting down Hope Pass my ITB flared up and I was done for the day. Long, long, unhappy trip down to the road where my bracelet was then cut from my arm. My first DNF.

Things Done Right:
A lot of things really. I learned a lot with this attempt. Things that went well included, rest before the race, and my hydration/fueling plan worked great too. I was about as relaxed as anyone can be before starting a 100 mile race. Nervous but it was manageable.

Things Done Wrong:
“Might” have gone out too fast but not 100% on that. Suspect I may have been going too fast up Sugarloaf Pass after looking back on it over some time. Carried too much “gear” on my trip up Hope pass. Weight I could have done without as the weather stayed stable, but what are you going do about that one? Mental game was hard to keep in check once the race got underway. Often started thinking of the entire course as opposed to just getting to the next aid station. Got some bad blisters which I hadn’t dealt with all summer, possibly due to the heat? Really taking more time off and being serious about that before the event may have been a good idea too.

Any Other Stuff:
I did a complete postmortem after this attempt and really looking back more good came out of it than bad. For starters just training for this event put me in races that I would have never done before. I had my best running year ever most likely. This race has been a goal of mine for 16 years or more and just finally attempting it last year was significant. I plan to return in 2010 to do it again and use everything that I learned this year.

California International Marathon — Sacramento CA — 12/6/2009

Andrea Hill reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: Pace Mom through her first marathon (her goal was 5 hrs)
Results: 5:03:39
Full race report: http://www.afhill.com/gothedistance/2009/12/california-international-marathon-race-report/

General Summary: A cooler day in California than I would have liked; I think I was more nervous at marathon #28 than Mom was for #1 (she didn’t know what she was getting into!); decent course, a bit lacking in organization. Great memories!

Things Done Right: Didn’t let Mom pull a faster pace band than what she’d trained for; kept a manageable pace so we were passing folks through the last few miles; got personalized shirts to help with motivation

Things Done Wrong: Not much: a couple unexpected bathroom breaks are probably all that separated us from our goal. Forgot to advise Mom to have warm-up clothes to put on afterward.

Any Other Stuff: The CIM was a decent race for a first-timer, although a course with more crowd support could have helped too. The hotel buses never showed up so we all had to hike to the convention center in the morning, and there was no crowd control in the last half mile. But still a positive experience for Mom and I!

Rock Canyon Half-Marathon — Pueblo, Colorado — 12/05/2009

Donald Hawkins reports:
Distance: Half Marathon
Goal: 1:30 something
Results: 1:42

General Summary:
I had not ran this race yet, and felt obliged to run it as I live in Pueblo West. I do a lot of my running along the route, so it was familiar to me.

Things Done Right:
Didn’t go out too fast. Didn’t dehydrate. (seemed to be a problem for me this year) Dressed perfect for the race versus just the start. Pace was about right for my current fitness level. I had originally planned on 1:30. Learned about a month prior that it wouldn’t happen. Later in the year maybe! Put a few screws in the shoes. Gave me confidence more than anything. I slipped on the way to pick up my packet!

Things Done Wrong:
Did not train for it at all. Was a little sore at the start, and it never did go away. Pace (7:15 or so) was good until about mile 11 then fell off. The screw shoes I wore were not the shoes I had planned on wearing.

Any Other Stuff:
I was glad the course was on more dirt than I initially thought it was. I was under the impression it was on the sidewalk/ asphalt the entire length.
Was very surprised and glad I saw as many ICer’s there as I did. I usually travel up there to run, and some of you came down to my neck of the lower altitude world.

California International Marathon — Sacramento — 12/06/2009

Craig Hafer reports:
Distance: 26.2
Goal: Reverse the increasing marathon time trend of 2009
Results: Best run of the year!

General Summary:
They weren’t calling me a “skirt wearing Betty” at the California International Marathon in Sacramento this year. I learned that my DNF at this marathon in 2007 qualified me for the SWB nickname. I could not even be excused due to food poisoning illness!

Things Done Right:
I was dressed for the cool start in the low 30’s and hung with the 3:10 pace setter group through the 1/2. Around mile 16 the headwind increased in intensity so I picked up the pace and drafted in behind the 3:10 crowd. At 19-1/2 the wind died down and I found the 3:10 group slowly drifting on ahead of me. Even so, I knew I was finishing strong as I continued to pass a number of runners on my way to a 3:11 finish.

Things Done Wrong:
How much faster could I have run by taking more time between marathons to recovery/train? The Women’s Nike marathon was only seven weeks earlier.

Any Other Stuff:
Marathon time trend for 2009:
It really started in 2008:
Tucson (2008) — 3:09
Walt Disney World — 3:16
Big Sur — 3:16
Steamboat — 3:19
Women’s Nike — 3:25
CIM — 3:11 (yeah!)
