Good Evening Incline Club!

Despite the less than nice weather this past week, we still had almost 80 folks show up for the first freeze fest of the year. But just to show that we don’t just run in freezing cold weather, we will have another run this Sunday when they are calling for much nicer weather! :-)

To make it even more interesting, this will be the first FeedBag of the year!. Whats a FeedBag? Keep reading....

NEXT RUN: Longs Ranch Road
***********************************************
Sunday, Dec 13, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Run out the Ute Pass Trail and take a right and head over to do the Waldo Canyon loop in the clockwise direction. Return via the UPT. 2-3 hours, if it would be longer do an out/back.

THIS WEEK’S QUOTE:
***********************************************
“...I thought it would be a good time to throw out a reminder that at least in the world of ultra-endurance athletics you (not your parents) are most responsible for how far up the ladder you choose to climb.” --Alan Couzens

FeedBag:
***********************************************

Back by popular demand, this weekend we will kick off the monthly feedbag tradition. This Sunday, December 13th, if your first name starts with “A” through “M” please bring enough food and drink for you and 3 other people. We will once again stick the food in the back of a car and have at it after the run. As a reminder by food, I mean if you like a banana and a Gatorade after your run then bring 4 bananas and 4 Gatorades etc. Anything goes!

We will try and schedule the feedbag to coincide with the first run of the month when the weather does not look too bad. Note that the feeding typically begins around 10am and continues until about 12 or until all of the food is gone :-)

Going to the Dogs:
***********************************************
Many folks have asked, so here is a recap of the clubs guidelines for our four legged friends:

* Please pick up after your pooch. Nobody likes stepping in it.

* Note that dogs and crowds of runners usually do not mix well. Please keep your friend away from the main group so we don’t have any issues with folks stepping on or tripping over poor rover.

* Along those lines, when starting out, either wait a few minutes or pick an alternate path (i.e., down Lovers Lane) to avoid the initial pack of runners.

* Note that while most dogs like to run, some dogs don’t like the competition. Please keep em separated so as to avoid any misunderstandings.

* Leash Laws do apply when in Manitou. Note that if your dog does not have the ability to stay by your side at all times and respond via voice even when distracted by that cute poodle or tasty rabbit, then you should probably always keep them on a leash at all times. It is best to avoid any issues with some of the local wildlife which has been known to see your best friend as their next meal.

* Along those lines, a 6’lead is best. Those retractable leashes tend to result in rover going to one side, you going to the other and a nice tripwire being setup between the two of you to snare any runners that happen to be going by.

***********************************************
Free Shoes:
***********************************************
Ok, so the first attempt at handing out a free pair of shoes kinda fell flat since nobody wanted to be left out in the cold and the best anybody did was drive 1 other runner with them. This week the weather will be much better and the feedbag will remove any excuses folks will have not to stick around afterward. Thus there will be two certificates for a free pair of running shoes up for grabs to the driver(s) of the vehicle with the most runners in it. So contact your running friends and lets cut down on the cars coming to the runs. Ties will be broken by a coin toss.

***********************************************
Weather Report:
***********************************************
Much nicer. Starting temps around 30 with a high temp around 45. It should also be mostly sunny.

***********************************************
Suggested Course Overview:
***********************************************
This week's suggested run is Waldo Canyon.

The full course is approximately 15 miles with 3000ft of elevation gain and a high point of 8100ft. For those who are not yet up to that distance, common ‘out and back’ distances are as follows:

LRR Intersection: 7 miles & 1000ft of gain
Start of the Waldo Loop: 11.5 miles & 2000ft of gain
Bail Trail: Approx 9 miles. (Don’t try this unless you are with somebody who knows where they are going)

Race Reports:
***********************************************
This week Laura Anderson reports what life was like down south just before the storm hit....

Pueblo’s Rock Canyon Half Marathon — Pueblo, CO — 12/05/09

Laura Anderson reports:
Distance: 13.1
Goal: A little under 1:40
Results: 1:41.09 (bummer!) but still good enough for 3rd in age group
Website: http://www.socorunners.org/races/raceinfo/RockCanyoninfo2009.htm

General Summary:
Fun course----a little slippery! Will do it again. A well put on race for $25.

Things Done Right:
Got up early, ate a solid breakfast, and wore enough clothes!! Actually got a little warm.

Things Done Wrong:
Went really hard first 2 miles... Not sure if that mattered.. I didn’t blow up... Got caught at mile 11.5 or by the lady who ended up getting 2nd... Hence I got 3rd.

Any Other Stuff:
The race will run about 2 1/4 miles in City Park, then go down to the Arkansas River Trail. It is basically an out and back course going about 5 ? miles west to the base of Pueblo Dam and back. It will be run on dirt roads and dirt trails along the Arkansas River with a short distance on concrete and asphalt. No traffic and great views. The course is flat, however, there is one short, steep hill about 12 ? miles into the race, which goes from the river trail back up to City Park. All miles are clearly marked, both on the trail and above ground in case of snow.
