Good Evening Incline Club!

For those who think that we only run in bad weather, I present to you Sunday morning. While the rest of the weekend was cold, rather damp and generally miserable, there was a 5 hour window during the entire weekend that was just, well, perfect... and we had it for Sunday morning’s feedbag :-).

***********************************************
NEXT RUN: Interval (Thursday), Waldo/LRR Double! (Sunday)
***********************************************
Thursday, April 30, 5:45pm — Hydro Street
Warm up from Memorial Park in time to get to Hydro Street. Do 30 minutes of 1 min hard, 1 min easy up the Barr Trail. Easy back down the Barr Trail. Do 4 Hydro Street hill repeats.

Sunday, May 3, 8:00AM — Memorial Park
Waldo/LRR double! Run the UPT and then head over and do Waldo Canyon — clockwise. Next, head up LRR and return via the Barr Trail. 3-4 hours, if it would be longer just do Waldo or LRR.

BTMR Race Registration:
***********************************************
Registration for the 10th annual Barr Trail Mountain Race is upon us.

This is one of the best run races in the country. The BTMR is not one of those “portion of proceeds” gimmick races! Instead All race entry fees (yes, 100%) are donated to area non-profit/volunteer organizations. To make it more interesting, several local high school track teams will be battling for $6,000 in prizes for the best aid station. Over the past 9 years this race has donated $139,659.10 to folks like El Paso County Search and Rescue, Friends of the Peak and others.

Registration starts May 4th at 2am MT. Register before 4am and you can get in for only $15. After that the price goes up to $30. The race is limited to the first 425 folks, so don’t delay.

Weekend Weather Report:
***********************************************
Thursday: Mid 60’s and 50% sky cover. Toss in the obligatory 20% chance of thunderstorms.

Sunday: 40’s at the start under cloudy skies and it should be in the mid 50’s when you finish.

Race Reports:
***********************************************
This week, Anita keeps up the races with number 9 (give or take a few) for her first 100k.

WSU 100km — Palouse, WA — 04/19/2009

Anita Bower reports:
Distance: 62.2 miles
Goal: sub 10:30:00
Results: 10:35:15 (d*#*m it!) 1st place woman, 2nd overall
Website: http://www.palouseroadrunners.org

General Summary:
Also run as a relay, this very hilly course was my first official 100km. My goal was to go under 10 1/2 hours, as it is one of the qualifications to get into the Spartathlon. Although I qualify with Badwater, the Spartathlon is fast, with a runner needing the ability to run over 153 miles in just 36 hours. As I quickly found out, the race strategy of a 100km is much different than that of a 50 or 100 mile run.

Things Done Right:
Lost weight. Was 119 at the start. Felt great. Stayed with friends of Tim’s who have kids, and they were great kids! Now I want some.(after I run the Spartathlon and across the USA)Perfect weather, nice race director. Small crowd of solo runners, was in fourth, until I happily “chicked” two guys. Enjoyed the scenery (cool pictures on my blog), as I had never run a race in WA before. The cows there are huge! Some are bigger than the horses.

Things Done Wrong:
Lost time one this one flat 16 mile section. Palouse is rolling farmland, which is great if you are good at climbing, and since it was on paved and gravel roads, I could hammer the downhill. I fell apart on the flat section with a strong headwind, and didn’t drink enough. Paid for it later, missing my goal by less than 6 minutes.

Any Other Stuff:
Having the relay runners was fun, as they were all so nice and encouraging. Very beautiful course, lots of red barns with horse, sheep, cows, chickens, like a whole other era. Got to see Grizzly bears that they keep on the WSU Campus. (caged, of course)
