Happy Wednesday, ICers!

Isn’t this cold-weather running great? Last week’s run brought out 77 runners; 15 of whom made it all the way to Barr Camp. Be sure to keep warm with us this Sunday when we run the UPT/Waldo Loop.

Running Goals
If you haven’t already, now is a great time to start thinking about your running goals for next year and committing to how you will accomplish them. If you’ve already gotten out to some IC runs, you are ahead of the game for your 2006 races! Put those goals down in writing, and then plan to train hard and smart in 2006!

Kick Off the New Year
If you are local, or are planning on being in the area on New Year’s Day, a great way to kick off the year is by coming out for the New Year’s Day Incline Club Run! Or, you can start off with a race by participating in The Rescue Run. Besides setting the tone for a great trail running season, the Rescue Run (which is mixed pavement/trail) benefits El Paso County Search and Rescue. Without them, the Pikes Peak Ascent/Marathon, Barr Trail Mountain Race and many other local races would not be nearly as safe or enjoyable. See the detailed description of the race from Dave Sorenson below, and consider running it!

Note: If you run the 10k and submit and “R” Report, it counts for a “*”. Otherwise, come out and join the rest of the ICers for a fantastic New Year’s Day run!

New Member and Updated About Me Pages
Starting this week, we’ll be highlighting our newest IC members as well as letting you know who has updated their About Me pages. What a great way to welcome new members and/or see what new interests or updates your IC friends might have to share.

Train hard, and train smart, and stay warm!

THIS WEEK’S QUOTE:
***********************************************

“The man who will make the most progress is the man who is willing to pay the biggest price. In racing, as in life, good genes help, but they only get you just so far. Rich parents are handy too, but they can only buy you so much. Beyond that point, every improvement carries a price tag, and in distance running, it’s counted in miles of training. You pay in advance for speed and endurance” — Peter Strudwick

For more about this week’s quote, please see the details from Matt Carpenter in the ICers Write section!

Matt Carpenter Gives a Sermon?
Matt writes: Several have asked me about the “sermon” I gave before our Longs Ranch Road run two weeks ago. Specifically, they wanted to know the book I was reading from when I read:

“The man who will make the most progress is the man who is willing to pay the biggest price. In racing, as in life, good genes help, but they only get you just so far. Rich parents are handy too, but they can only buy you so much. Beyond that point, every improvement carries a price tag, and in distance running, it’s counted in miles of training. You pay in advance for speed and endurance.”

The book was “Come Run With Me” by Peter Strudwick. It is the story of his training for the 1972 Pikes Peak Marathon. Peter’s mother caught German measles while pregnant with him which caused him to be born with severe birth defects. This included legs that ended in stumps just past the ankles, a left arm that had only one thumb and finger, and a right arm ending at the wrist. I liked the fact that although he had every excuse there is he just shut the hell up and trained. Indeed, he ran the 1972 PPM in 7:02:28 and in the process ran a 4:20:29 Ascent.

As for the rest of the “sermon” that was a play on one of Aragorn’s speeches in Lord of the Rings.

Run the Rescue Run on January 1!
Dave Sorenson writes: It’s getting close to Rescue Run time again. Please consider participating in this event. Both a 5K and a 10K are offered on hilly courses in Palmer Park. The Rescue Run is on New Year’s Day, Sunday, January 1st at 10:00 am. This is the same day as an Incline Club run, but since the 10K has about 2 miles on trails, it does qualify for an Incline Club “R,” if you submit a race report.

The Rescue Run is organized jointly by the Pikes Peak Road Runners and the El Paso County Search & Rescue. All proceeds of the race go to the El Paso County Search & Rescue. These are the folks that provide free search & rescue services in the Pikes Peak region. They also support the local running events by providing on-course communication and medical services for the following events: Rescue Run, PPRR Winter Series, Barr Trail Mountain Race, Pikes Peak Ascent,Pikes Peak Marathon. At this year’s Pikes Peak Ascent, when the hail and lightening strikes were making things misereable and downright dangerous above treeline, the El Paso County Search & Rescue just hung right in there and made sure everybody got safely up the trail, putting themselves in harms way for the benefit of the runners.

The shirt is a long-sleeve mock turtleneck, color navy. Here is a link to the artwork: http://www.pprrun.org/docs/2006RescueRunArtwork.jpg There will also be many random prize drawings which have been donated by local merchants.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and have a wonderful holiday.

Update on Banned Bike Rides!
James Haring writes: The Colorado State Patrol has agreed to delay implementing the policy for one year. In the meantime they have agreed to meet with representatives from the cycling community to discuss alternatives.

“R” REPORTS:
***********************************************
Anita Bowers reports:
Race: High Desert Ultra 50km
Location: Ridgecrest, CA
Date: December 4, 2005
Distance: 50km
Goal :break 5 hours
Results: 5:02:52
Website: http://othtc.com

General Information: This 50km is a well-organized 50km in the Mojave desert. My goal was to break 5 hours, however, a wise man once said something to the affect that if you reach all your goals, then you are setting them too low.

Things done right: Went out harder than usual, and was able to keep up my pace until the last 2 miles. Didn’t spend more than a minute at any of the aid stations.

Things done wrong: Ran an incredibly tough race the week before. I also got dehydrated because the water tasted funny, and I didn’t want to drink it, as it was upsetting my stomach. I ended up in the bushes for about 5 minutes, which along with being tired from last weeks adventure race, cost me my sub-5 hours goal. Oh well. Something to work towards.

Angela Cassidy reports:
Race: 2005 Pikes Peak Ascent
Location: Pikes Peak
Date: 8/20/05
Distance: 13.2
Goal: 5:30
Results: 5:22

General Information: This was my first event of any note. I was all nerves that morning sustaining a 110+hr before for the hour before the start. Believing that I was going to be about the last to finish, I started at the back of the 2nd wave pack. Attempting a light jog was out of the question as most were walking. The hail hurt. Every now and then, you’d hear a yelp from someone getting smacked with a big one. The lightning would have been scary if I wasn’t so high on gu. The ice was slippery (thank you to runners who warned “ice” to those of us behind you). I was super cold within seconds of finishing.

Things done right: Steady and slow training. I started in March from a base of NOTHING. I was religious about using Matt’s training schedule. Came to town during late spring to make time trial to Barr Camp to get a feel for how I’d do and was encouraged with results. Tapered per instructions and was intolerably hyper for the days prior. Couldn’t wait to start!

Things done wrong: Started training too late and missed the first trimester. Messed up my knee for about a month by too much jumping around. Should have dropped more weight so I wouldn’t have to carry it up the hill. Had work meltdown the day before and had to spend Friday working in a Starbuck’s rather than mental buildup.

Calculator: Carried it with. Calculator prediction at Barr Camp (2:35) was 5:30ish. Made it in 5:22. I’m very impressed with its accuracy, but that storm must have played a factor in slowing everyone down. Other Stuff: Hail bruises took a few weeks to go away. Thanks to my brother John for getting me started with this. Single guy (that he told you about in his report) that I met Ruxton and me doing just fine. See y’all next year!

Anita Bowers reports:
Race: Santa Barbara 9 Trails
Location = Santa Barbara, CA
Date =November 26th, 2005
Distance = 35 miles
Goal =10 hours
Results = 11:50
Website = http://allwedoisrun.com

General Information: The SB9T was advertised to be “runnable,” however, 10,000 feet of climbing and descending on technical terrain made this nearly impossible for me. The race was run on 9 separate trails along coastal trails in SB.

Things done right: Took it very easy, since I wanted to run another race the next weekend. Took in lots of calories and fluids. Didn’t step in the sulfur springs as I was crawling through the bamboo tunnel, or hit my head on the metal pipes over head. I also learned to rappel, as there was a large portion of the trail that was washed away.

Things done wrong: Ran what downhill sections I could. My quads were so sore I couldn’t run for three days.

Other Stuff: Not a good first time ultra.

12/11 Sun: 77 came out for a run up the Barr Trail. About 15 made it to Barr Camp with most everyone else doing out/backs either to No Name or Bobs Road. Although it was cold on Ruxton (as always) it was actually fairly nice once we got up into the sun. Karen Brennan was once again nice enough to bake us some cookies which were waiting for us when we finished our run.
