Hi ICers,
The reports are coming in that the snow is melting fast off of the Barr Trail and not really an issue until the last mile to the summit. From there I am told that it is patchy (and even dicey in spots) but it sounds like it is ahead of this time last year. I can only vouch for the fact that there is no snow until right at the 2 mile sign. To see the date of the last Barr Trail snow day since 1997 head here: http://www.skyrunner.com/snowpeak.htm
##
Tip of the day: I know EVERYONE is taking water with them on their Sunday long runs right? However, if you dont take water with you in the Peak races then only drink water during your training runs at the same locations as the aid stations. This will get your body used to what it will encounter on race day. It is also a good way to find out if perhaps you should be taking water with you during the race.

Thanks to everyone who ran last Sunday and did not park by Memorial park! It was pretty awesome to see ALL the spots empty for the people who had paid to use the park last week:-)

Someone challenged me to link up their about me page with their PPA/M results. Sounded fun to me. If you ran the PPA/M with the same name as your club name a results link should be working on your about me page that will display just your results. If you used a different name (Robert instead of Bob for example) or did not run one of the races then you can log on and change your link name or turn off the link. Also, you may need to add a middle initial to your link name to weed out other runners with the same name as yours. To get started however it seemed best just to turn the link on since most ICers have done one of the races.

My 2 cents (regarding trail etiquette): I always say hi to all of the folks I pass on the trail. And, I say thank you if they move to the side. Be nice! They may be the folks nearest to you if you need CPR.

My surgery went pretty well. May even be out on Sunday, otherwise next week.
(Matt C adds: Maddy has been at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota getting her heart worked on. Only Maddy would talk about running an IC run (or any run for that matter) the week after surgery - gotta love it:-)

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Karl Schab reports:
Race = Camp As Sayliyah Patriot Run 2004
Location = Camp As Sayliyah, Doha, Qatar
Date = 31 May 04
Distance = 5K
Goal = run
Results = ran
General = Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) organizes a 5K or 10K (or both) most holiday weekends. This was an out-and-back around the heavily-guarded perimeter of Camp As Sayliyah. My first run with automatic weapons and guard towers guarding the course. 5:30 show and 6 am go, but the sun has already been up for almost two hours by then--Qatar does not observe daylight savings time. Temp was well into the 90s.
Right = Dragged my sorry butt out of bed to go for a run. Oh, and I drank plenty of water.
Wrong = I copped an attitude when I got recalled to active duty, because Im going to miss the PPA/M, and have only managed to run about once a week, and never more than a 5K. It certainly showed today. It was my slowest 5K ever, and I was not prepared. Oh, well, call it the start of a more focused training regimen--on a treadmill in an air-conditioned gym, I hope.
Other Stuff = Any ICers who want to follow my time on active duty can read my blog at http://windmir.blogspot.com.

Curt Krieger reports:
Race = Stu Nevermann Memorial Run XV
Location = Mason City, Iowa
Date = May 29, 2004
Distance = 5 Miles *(shortened to 4 this year due to flooding)
Goal = participate, run easy
Results = 20th overall and 1st in age group with a 27:09
General = This is an annual event in memory of young runner and acquaintance of mine, Stu Nevermann. His father began this event the year following Stus unexpected death. It has traditionally been a free entry yet has attracted excellent participants every year. The 5 mile course record is 24:54!
Right = There is probably nothing right about running a 5 mile race the week following my first 50K. But if anything was right it was that I have run in every Stu Nevermann race since I returned to Mason City in 1991. This was my 14th of the 15 annual Stus. I did stay back from my traditional starting pace and tried to ease through the distance to keep from injuring tired muscles.
Wrong = See above!
Other Stuff = Rain storms this year caused concern for the runners safety. Runoff from an early morning storm caused 4-5 inches of flow across the furthest reaches of the course and forced the directors to shorten the distance this year to 4 miles. Lightning caused a half hour delay to the start.

5/30/04 Sun: The Memorial Day holiday produced our smallest Sunday run in a while with only 74 showing for a run up the Barr Trail. It was a tad cold today and above the A-Frame the wind was wicked cold! However, a lot of snow as melted since last week and it is not an issue until right at the 2 mile to go sign. Brenda dipped below 270 when she weighed in at 268 in the BWU100.
5/27/2004 Thur: 44 showed for a 30 minute tempo run up the Barr Trail. Quite a few reported major progress today with several getting a minute or more further up the trail than 2 weeks ago:-) 8 Hydro hell repeats finished off the workout. 5 formerly perfect Thursday streakers broke their streak today must have something to do with the Memorial Day weekend coming up.
