We managed to go from the top down to the 16 Golden stairs sign. It was amazing the before/after when we went back up for the second time. I will be keeping track of hours for Friends of the Peak and after 5 hours of work you get a neat Pikes Peak T-Shirt. This week after we run to the top the plan is to walk or run down to the 16 Golden Stairs sign and try to clear down to the 1 mile to go sign. #### Robin F writes: Looks like we have two Robin F named people on this list. Saw my name but I really could not remember doing the run. I guess it wont be a problem till I make it up there to do a run or race. I am in the Ascent this year. Hey! My first year was also 1987. Have not done the round trip. In our running group there is a girl named Robin, so we are referred to as Boy Robin or Girl Robin. The info and photos are great!! Thank you & keep up the good work. My son lives in Canon City so I hope to make at least one incline workout. See you. Robin F from Plano,TEXAS #### If you got a few seconds could you go here http://www.fotp.com/guestbook/guestbook.html and test out the guest book I made for the Friends of the Peak www site! THANKS!!! #### Keith L writes: As a semi-regular on your clubs Sunday runs, I wanted to let you know I took 4 minutes off of my last years GoG time!! I did a 1:18:49 this time. Stronger on the uphills & faster on the downhills! Thanks to all in the club for the inspiration! It was ugly. It made me cry. It made me laugh (but then Im easily amused). Your first round-trip run to the top of Pikes Peak and back after not having done it in a while will do that to you. It was a struggle for me for pretty much the whole workout, but it had its high points. The weather wasnt too bad, with the exception of a snow pellet shower on the way back down. I got an early start (6:30am) so it was fairly cool for most of the run, for some reason I just wasnt feeling very energetic. It was an effort for me going up as my legs felt dead, and like a death march coming down on the return gravity was of little help. It took me 6.5 hrs of running, walking, crawling, whining (mostly to myself, but also to anyone I thought I might be able to bum some sympathy off of) for the round trip from Soda Springs Park about an hour or more longer than the time to which I am accustomed. And I kept tripping, occasionally over myself, but mostly over rocks. I nearly suffered serious trail rash once or twice, but fortunately was able to pull off a self-arrest in mid-fall. The nerve of those rocks, laying there in the middle of the trail on a Sunday morning waiting to take advantage of my weekend state. My Geological Debris Offender Probation Officer friend would no doubt refer to these rocks as arrogant. I might have been better off just sleeping in were it not for the few wonderful moments thrown in with the wonderless that made it worthwhile... Like the Columbines I spotted on Barr trail yes, theyre finally out in all their morning glory. They were located within a narrow length of trail, in the shade of the trees, just above No Name Creek (which, in my opinion, should be renamed since its name No Name is obviously a name and so it cannot possibly have no name so why should it be called No Name?). Seeing them helped provide me with a lift, at least for a few steps. And if I had slept in, I would certainly have missed another exciting adventure. If you made the decision to pound the pavement back in the Garden 10-miler, or turned around before the top, you might be disappointed to learn that you missed... Roger Recon III. This third in a series of searches sponsored by Scavenger Division of the Incline Club was conducted at the summit of Pikes Peak. There was an alleged Roger sighting at the summit house where a disheveled male Caucasian was reported to have been seen attempting to jump the counter of the concession with the aid of a garment. However, this proved to be a false Roger sighting when the disheveled male Caucasian turned out to be just another deranged Texan dressed in Parka lunging over the counter in a ravenous hypoxic state trying to grab another doughnut. The Roger search was then moved to the upper part of Barr trail where Matt had us looking for the Fashion Offender under rocks, and then (and I am not making this up) removing the rocks from the trail so as to eliminate any places for Roger to hide (and also because these rocks were arrogantly laying in the middle of the trail). This was hard work at 14,000+ ft, but I didnt mind that so much as the mortal fear of having to actually stick my hands under rocks, because we all know what (besides Roger) likes to hide under rocks: the deadly SOUTH AFRICAN INNER TUBE SNAKE! Yes, we now know these reptiles have been sighted by incline members at higher altitudes, and they choose (as we all would) to hide under rocks in order to avoid capture by the Slimy Reptile Offender Probation Officer (by this I mean the Probation Officer for Slimy Reptile Offenders, as opposed to the Slimy Probation Officer of Reptile Offenders, which brings me to the real point of this tangent: Did you know that the letters in probation officer can be re-arranged to spell cite proof of brain?). And then there was the social aspect of my almost not quite so wonderful run. There didnt seem to be quite as many folks on the trail as you might expect for a Sunday, though I did encounter many familiar faces, mostly on the way back down. Matt C caught up with me just as I reached the summit (even with my hour and a half head start, he still beat me to the top!). And I got to talk with the omnipresent Craig who kept me entertained by sharing his thrilling tomes of pace charts with me while we waited for the others to arrive. A few other Incliners reached the summit shortly after to help with the trail cleanup. And on my way down (after putting in 20-30 minute of hard labor on the rocks) I saw more familiar faces: Neal T, Teresa T, Larry M, Todd B, John O, Glen T and Joy R from Leadville (they both did the Garden and were doing a cooldown jog up to A-frame and back what animals!). Having some familiar face to whine to about how bad I felt somehow made me feel, well, mediocre (which is better than bad). I did make it down OK, grimy, tired, beat-up, and so it will probably take more than the usual amount of time (2 days?) to forget about the experience and start looking forward to the next workout. p.s. Lets all wish Good Luck to those Incline members running some big races in the near future: Good luck to Bob Mc who is running Mt. Washington (another record Bob?); Good Luck to Anne Marie running Comrades (watch out for the snakes); and a Good Luck to anyone running Sailin Shoes (not for the race so much as for finding any FREE BEER left if certain Incline members get to it first). And finally, I would like to take this opportunity to (shamelessly) congratulate Laura L (my one and only) for her great run in this years Garden of the Gods 10 miler where she finished 6th woman overall in a time of a little over 69 minutes. Shes my buddy and my hero and more! #### WWW post Still need to post last Sunday SORRY! 6/8/2000 A large group of 50 people met today. Most did 30 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy but some did shorter workouts as a taper for upcoming races. Many reported getting quite a bit further than the last time we did this workout. Also a lot of people are starting to look really strong on the Hydro Street hill repeats. #### Go out hard, when it hurts speed up... Matt Carpenter http://www.skyrunner.com
